How to use a Laminar Flow Hood? 1

Hey guys,
I've never used a flow hood, and don't really need one for where I'm at in this hobby, but I recently found a mycology prof selling his on Kijiji! The price was right so I picked it up. Thing is I've never used one and don't know much about them...
Is it something I could use sitting at a desk in a small room? It sounded like he would put his in the window similar to an air conditioner
Anyways I'd like some tips on how to use this thing. The more detailed the better. The only posts I've found on how to build one. So please send some info my way! thx.

Um, pretty easy. Turn it on and let it run for 2 hours before using. Wipe the table top part down with alcohol towel. Always work up stream. Meaning don't have any obstructions between what you're working on and the filter. The mushroom cultivator has it outlined pretty well on how to use a hood. Buy the book. Read it religiously.

Ha. No. It's a chapter on sterile technique and agar culture. Followed by a chapter on grain culture. Really inoc? You don't have our bible? People can say blah blah blah it's 30 years old wha wah, but it is a wealth of information. And frankly, you too goddamn smart not to have the book in your personal library. Tell your girl to get it for you for Christmas. If she doesn't, i will. Don't quote just the last sentence either you perv

I don't mean to be a prick, but I don't understand why some people say to leave a hood on for an hour or two before using it.
I've worked in sterile hoods for 20 + years and don't know of a good reason for this type of practice.
I turn a hood on about ten minutes before I use it.

Are you working in a clean room? As in, a room that is positively pressurized? I'm guessing yes? Most people here are in a house kitchen. Very far from clean. I only run mine for about an hour, but it is in a lab (but not a positively pressurized one). OP mentions using it in his kitchen, so i recommended 2 hours. I understand the concept that you should be able to use it within minutes, but if you're not in a "clean room" there's lots of shit moving everywhere. And im high.
Inoc, the info that is correct is so fucking huge that when you're standing on it, the stuff you corrected with look like far away ants

A hood is an air filter. The air that comes thru it is clean.
I just don't understand how an hour or two running before doing transfers would help anything.

During those 2 hours it will clean most if not all of the air. I don't have a flow hood so im only imagining it here. When the flow hood blows it disturbes the air around the flow. The effect of this creates vortexes that will turn inside the flow which the flow in turn blows it in your work. I think this has more chance of happening the slower the flow is moving. Sort of like when you are standing near a fast passing bus. When it passes you can feel a gust blowing toward the middle of the path it took.
I think you would be able to see this with incense or some other type of smoke. Its more going the extra mile than a requirement, which can never hurt.
As I said I don't have a hood so there might be a chance im wrong so it would be nice to see someone with actual experience with a hood give his 2c about this. It makes perfect sense in my mind though.
