I pulled this off of a downed doug fir about 20 miles east of Seattle. Its pretty heavy for its size- pretty gnarly. I've not seen anything quite like it, but my gut says Fomitopsis. Didn't get spore color confirmation- I suspect white. The brown areas of the pore surface are where it latched on to some leaves and moss- it does not stain when scratched. Anybody got any ideas?

I think Laricifomes officinalis is a good guess. Fomitopsis ochracea is another possibility but I think that tends to have a different type of margin.
I think both will have a pale cream context and tube color.

Well, I always struggle to describe smells, but its earthy... woody... subtle hints of fruit. Kind of bright on the back end... maybe a little watermelon rind or cucumber. It smells good. Not overwhelming or off-putting aroma by any means. Actually it smells fantastic. Like all the intricacies of life crammed into one 8 inch by 6 inch blob o' brown and white. Full approval.
Thanks for taking a look Mrcloudy. And thanks for putting together that sic Ganoderma guide. Brilliant work.

I cut a couple of hunks out of it to throw on some cardboard. Definitely has a context similar to F. pinicola. I always think chewy when I look at it, but this context is a little softer and easier to slice. At least in the small area where I took it off the tree. I tasted a bit and it was quite bitter. I'm leaning heavily towards Laricifomes officinalis. Anybody got any special recipes for making medicine out of these? Basic tincture I suppose? Maybe it'll make a good fermented fizzy beverage ingredient.
