Kit or no kit? Whats your experiences...

Hi, I am looking to grow for the first time. As a first time grower, the kits seem real appealing, and easy to use. But are they neccessary? Perlite, Chamber, substrate jars... thats about what they are, but everything is premade, sterilized and sealed. For a first grow would that not be my best option? How hard is the materials to find to make the substrate myself? I'm just trying to decide because it seems the most trustful sites only have spores, and getting a kit seems risky. What did everyone here use for their first grow? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I told someone I knew how to cultivate. Being "helpful" he bought a Homestead kit in Canada. In spite of myself I never could get that thing to grow.

I would get the supplys you need by your self...any kit you buy is sure to be several times the price that you would pay if you got the stuff seperate. And if you are going to grow then you should now how to make up the jars your self anyway. Never go very far relying on somebody else to make them for you...they are the easiest part of growing and is where you should start.

my first grow i bought 1 spore print and followed the tek on this site to the letter, it was relatively inexpensive and it worked like a charm, sometimes the easiest way isnt the best way.

Once you get past the initial startup cost of buying all your supplies (as little as $50 or as much as $200 depending on how involved you want to get), your 2nd and 3rd grows cost you in the range of $2-3 at most. I would just buy the supplies and do it yourself. I've never used a kit but wouldn't need to because I don't think cultivating with jars is hard once you go throught the procedure once or twice.

The closest thing to a kit I could ever recommend would be a pre-filled spawn bag + syringe.
They tend to work well, but slowly (particularly if you don't keep the temp up around 85)
If you're just getting started and just want to see how the growth cycle goes (and you have some money to burn) bags work well. Just know that if you do enjoy it, you'll end up buying a PC, incubator, etc anyways!
-------------------- By "I", I of course mean a good friend of mine who happens to live in the fine city of Amsterdam. "I" is just so less awkward.

You can get kits in the states that come with spore syringes, fee was refering to the ones that i can get in canada that come with the mycelium already grown, its like a premade casing. apparently they cant sell those to people in the states
