best casing material for newbie
    #2246252 - 01/16/04 03:58 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

a friend of mine has 6 PF jars nearly colonized - wants to case them bastards. not advanced enough for bulk substrates, etc. just wants to case 'em. Interested in something more rich than simple verm - coir perhaps? jiffy mix?

any ideas?

word

how do you prepare it? cant find a definite link.

also, 3 jars are EQs and the other three are Kohs. can my friend case them together? or will they compete? (say one side EQs and the other side KS - not mixed - just separate)

thanks!

You can do that one on ech side is fine you can even mix them up too. They wont compete because they are allready colinized so they arent fighting for the substrate. You prepare coco coir just like you do verm. The only differnce is that coco coir comes in a brick and is a bitch to break apart. Once you do have it broken apart dont judge size until you add water it expands like crazy.

bust enough off the brick to fill 2 jars about 2/3 full. wet it down in a big bowl till it drips a little when squeezed. fill it into the 2 jars, cover with some plastic wrap (or plastic jar lids). Microwave that shit for 3 min on high. take the jars out and put the lids on. let em sit for 3hrs or so. Use this as you would any other casing material. Many ppl mix substrate/coir 2/1 and put a casing layer on top of that.

acually if you pasturize it will work better but yes sterilization works also I have done it both ways and had alot better success with pasturization

I think he meant that some people mix coco coir with there soil or what not in a ratio of 2-1 and then add a layer of coir on top for there casing.

I personally *love* Jiffy Mix as my casing material of choice.

It's 1/2 verm, 1/2 peat moss with some lime tossed in to fix the pH.

It's cheap and comes in a number of sized bags. You can get it a bit wetter than field capacity, nuke it for 5 minutes, wait for it to cool down (about 15-20 minutes) and case away.

Plus you can find Jiffy Mix damn near anywhere!

By "I", I of course mean a good friend of mine who happens to live in the fine city of Amsterdam. "I" is just so less awkward.

I use coir mixed in with organic soil.  I also nuke it for 5 min in microwave.  Seems to flush well and doesn't contaminate until the 3rd or 4th flush as long as you don't over wet it.:mushroom2:

That sounds more like a bulk substrate than ingredients in a casing layer.  But this is a 5 year-old thread, by the way.  ~Pixie~
