Question or 2, 3 maybe 4 on humidifying a small monotub style FC
    #22462238 - 11/01/15 01:03 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Right.....so my martha closet style type FC is completely fucked from a few years of inactivity, a move, rust and just plain shit,  so I have read and researched several fruiting chambers. I'd love to do a monotub but I just do not have enough spawn to do a worth while monotub, plus the spawn is 2 different types (and my tub may have the wrong kinda lid setup).....but anyway.... I have a 105 QT. tub, a really nice crane ultrasonic cool mist, a tube that fits nicely into the humidifier and I've got a hole setup in the tub.
I'm kinda concerned about condensation at the bottom of the tub but have thought of just slammin' some perlite, (to aid in humidifying) in the bottom of the tub and setting my trays on it.
What are ya'lls thoughts on going about doing it the way I have planned?

Also being the style of tub I have,  I am very curious as to FAE......If it was a straight monotub grow there'd be no question as to what to do. But, being the edges up by the lid are not sealed as the snap style tubs.....would I even have to worry about FAE?
I've added some pics to aid in what my plan is but it is not fully setup yet due to spawn is not ready. Any recommendations, links and shit constructive are welcome and much appreciated.

So it looks like your making a mini terrerium not a mono tub. This can work, but why not just fruit your trays in a shot gun fruiting chamber?

with it being such a small chamber, shotgun style with perlite would be best, no need for humidifiers with small chambers, just mist a few times daily save the humidifier for larger projects like a GH or martha style fruiting chamber. You could run the humidifier in the same room as the shotgun too

Right on.... thanks for the input......upon researching more into the shot gun fc, I'm not to sure about it and a bit skeptical as to the return I will get as I am not doing pf tek cakes, I am doing grains that are gonna be cased in plastic trays. And based off a lot of what I have read on SGFC's with the amount of holes used, RH doesn't usually exceed 75%-85%
If I can move towards the smaller side of bulk mono tub (i.e. smaller tubs), I will since getting a smaller tub or 3 isn't a issue.
Obviously the humidifier would be on a timer, I know ultra sonics put out a ass load of moisture but would setting the timer at longer intervals even make a difference and would I still need a better FAE system beings this is not a snap style tub?

Have you looked into monotubs at all? They are intended for bulk grows and don't require misting or fanning so long as you dial it in properly.

Humidifiers just add in one more component that could introduce potential contaminants. Because my first tubs weren't dialed in correctly, I did have to mist them, but only once a day.

Yes, I have done a ton of research on mono tubs, I just don't have enough spawn, imo, to make it worth while unless I use smaller qt. tubs.
Although I have read the links you provided previous to your reply.....thanks for adding them here, I will be sure to use them and the other useful references I have been finding.
I am just trying to figure my best path since I am about 2 weeks from full colonization.
Thanks for the input ya'll.

Just go the mini mono route. Just like a monotub just scaled down. That's all I do and I've loved it. I have 20qt tubs with four 15/16th holes drilled in the tub about 3 or 3.5 inches from the bottom and four in the lid. I use two qts of spawn for each tub and I've had pretty good results.

right....thanks for the input ya'll, I have a indoor greenhouse now but have decided to go with a tub with a ultra sonic along the lines of a indoor greenhouse setup, look at pics.....

The US is adjustable and I been doing test runs with it to see how it would do and so far it's doing a kick ass job and my RH is staying in the proper range for cased grains.
So I'm bout to case some chitwans in the next day or two, so I'm wondering...... I normally have let the cased spawn "incubate" in the dark for a few days before throwing them in the FC to fruit, but after I case them can I just toss them in my setup where there will obviously be light or should I stick with keeping them in the dark for a few days?
As for my casing I have always used coir..... I know folks will say it's not best for casing but I have never had a issue with it producing good results, so whats ya'lls opinion on the system I got growin'?

THIS ^^^^ you've ignored everybodys input, that 'fruiting chamber' has no means of FAE and seriously dude you dont need a humidifier unless doing a martha or a GH

I have grown before.... just trying something different.
Not sure how what others have said will work any better when I am accomplishing proper parameters for what is needed.
I don't have enough spawn for mono tub setup.
I am casing a few trays and placing them in the tub. I know mono tub will be my end result eventually but not at this time.

So..... the question I have asked has not been answered as far as to whether I should remain placing the freshly cased trays in the dark or just shoving them in the FC.

once spawned, cover the trays with foil and punch 4-5 holes across the top in a line just to provide gas exchange, then once fully colonized either put into the FC or apply a casing layer wait a few days then put in the FC, the whole incubating in the dark is outdated info, infact colonising grains/substrates benefit from ambient lighting.
EDIT: i didnt answer ur previous question either, trays do fine in a SGFC just bury them a bit in the perlite if this FC doesnt work out for you =], punch some holes on that tub or leave the lid cracked a bit

The tub is not snap lock like the rubbermaids and those like them, there are small gaps between the lid and the basin, plus from my research the US should not only produce the RH I desire but also provide FAE.
So.... how is the setup I got going going to fail?

I also have a GH to fall back on.

Too much humidity is bad for fruiting, it's like this. At 99% humidity the air is at full capacity of the amount of moisture it can hold so evaporation which is one of the most important pinning triggers is at a stand still. Fae is far more important for fruiting than humidity. A 75% humidity is perfect for fruiting

I have control over the RH so that's not the issue....timers work perfectly for such things
As I have stated..... this tub is not a snap type rubbermaid tub, it is a latch lock with a small gap on each side.... it should be plenty of room for air exchange along side of the US as it does push out air as well,  if you look at the first pics of the tub I posted you will see.

My main question was about whether I should put the freshly cased trays back in the dark or just throw them in the FC and let them grow,  that's all... nothing more, nothing less.

As I have stated..... I have a indoor GH, just not the spawn for such a grow.

EDIT:
I should add that I recently bought some potting soil that has fungus gnats in it and I'm not wanting to fuck up the spawn I have going.
I'm in the process of eliminating them little fucktards so they don't fuck my grow up and I don't think growing in my GH will fair well since they can get in from the underside.

I have done what you are trying OP. In fact i had the exact same tub. It can be made to work but took me a year to dial in. Many sopping wet trays along the way. Eventually I was tired of filling the reservoir or messing around to get it dialed in just right. Small systems are not easily dialed in with automation because the slightest change has a really big impact.

If you want to automate then build a greenhouse. Also the gnats will work in right through the lid. Already been there.

I started off using one of these stupid ultrasonic and tubes and air pumps and all that shit - yes they work but they are more trouble than what they are worth.

Your results won't be very good but I know you're gonna do it anyways so goodluck with that.

Like I stated..... I do have a GH, and have always had great success with GH & US in the past,  I was hoping to go with something different for the small amount of spawn I have.
I'll go with the GH since the tub will be such a problem to dial in even though I've had it at 85-92% RH for over 4 hrs. but I know outside RH will play a factor from day to day.
The fungus gnats are on their way out and should be taken care of in a couple days as I have taken steps of removing them, apple cider vinegar and yellow sticky traps are golden.... plus I've stopped watering the plants that harbor them. They aren't that bad and are in an entirely separate part of the house and may be moved outside as long as temps allow.
Thanks for all the input all.
