Why not Fortuna?

I've been scratching my head as to why Eureka and Arcata, a mere 30 minutes from here, has potential psilocybin growth but not Fortuna? Is it the proximity to the ocean?

If they grow 30 minutes away they almost certainly grow there too.

What species are you looking for? Are you certain that it doesn't occur where you are?
If it isn't growing there, it might be that it just doesn't thrive in that environment, or that somebody else came before you. Make that 30 minute drive.

Definitely have been making the drives, but so far to no avail. Could still be too early in the season temperature wise? I've been looking for semilanceata, cyanescens, cyanofibrillosas, and pelliculosas. I am using Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World by Paul Stamets as a reference, and on those four it's written their only habitat is Eureka/Arcata and further north. I haven't stumbled across anyone even hinting at finding active mushrooms here, so I figured there might be an actual science as to why I can't find them. The book has great tips on where to look for these species, but perhaps I'm still not far north enough. Any help or recommendations...even in the form of riddles....would be greatly appreciated

Where, ie environment, have you been looking? I've found Gyms at CR, and am almost certain, 99%ish, Cyans grow there- but haven't seen 'em yet.
I'm getting the feeling its not cold enough at the moment, buuuut have no real empirical means to validate.

I've looked among dying, wet wood throughout some nearby forests (off trail), thick patches of grass and dead leaves here, but plan to check out some broad grass/sedge grass fields tomorrow. I went to the 'famous' cyan spot near Eureka/Arcata, and all over the rhododendrons and dune grass surrounding but no dice. Any time I've gone out it's been within 1 day of a nice rain.
I haven't even heard of the Gymnopilus before you mentioned it - thanks! I'll definitely be keeping a close eye for those as well. Any chance you could recommend their habitat?

Look in maintained woodchips- near the parks and such. I'm fairly certain people have "seeded" as many places as possible. (I mean, all it takes is a bottle of spore slurry...) The Gyms I've found have been either in the woods, or on woodchip piles. You may need to wait for more than a day after a rain, but idk about cyans. Most of the stuff I've been reading is about a week or so, or at least that weekly is a good interval to check patches.
