Shroomery' definitely lacking the female-friendly Smileys.

Since there are female cultivators, maybe we should change that...

I think the concept and methodology of the sterile verm layer in PF jars is that 100% vermiculite doesn't support growth of any microbe, even if the verm contains some moisture . . .

That would be, unfortunately, quite wrong.  All it takes is moisture for the verm to be habitable.  If mold can grow on a shower curtain, it can grow on verm.  It's referred to as the dry verm layer more often than I've heard it called the sterile verm layer.  It's not sterile since there's holes right above it raining contams down on it.

Something has to be wrong with this logic, or else the PF tek would not work. No matter what, the vermiculite layer has moisture in it.

There's more to the story. For example, your coir doormat can stay wet for 5 months and never grow mold or anything else. I have moist perlite and vermiculite at work that I use for potting mixes, and they don't grow mold.

When you birth a jar the verm layer is dry and can be brushed off quite easily. I mean we can argue, but eyes and experience says it stays dry.

RR's song and dance about the coir doormat. Pphh. Has anyone ever taken part of a 5 month old door mat and put a piece on agar?  You can bet your ass there will be fucking mold on it.

That's sort of the point though....it can sit with all those mold spores on it not germinating lol, verm itself does not either, bith these can sit wet and be fine, it works in the pf tek becuase mold spores don't do fuck all on a dry surface.

And yet I see people's verm layer colonized with mold and shit because it got too wet.  If there's not germination occurring there's at least wicking or active transport.

mycelium will devour verm and coir, pretty hard pressed for it to actually germinate spores though, in the pf tek it will wick contams
