Bullshit!
    #2245171 - 01/15/04 09:58 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

Has anyone seen this show? It's hosted by Penn and Teller, and is on Showtime in the US. Unfortunately, none of the Canadian cable channels have picked up on it, so I'm forced to get what episodes I can from Kazaa. They expose all kinds of phoney bullshit, from psychics communicating with the dead, to feng shui, Nostradamus, ESP, and bottled water. It's often hilarious, but sometimes a little shocking when you realize just how damaging and downright criminal some of these scam artists are.

Anyone seen it? Got an opinion about what they're saying? Have they gotten anything wrong?

I liked what it said in Philosophy For Dummies about Skepticism. Skeptics don't have to be answered to be refuted, employing the principle of belief conservitism, it is revealed that a skeptic can only illustrate the limitation of evidence.

I haven't seen that show, but I have seen Pen and Teller live... and I had dinner with them one night as well. They are very different off stage (both talk).

"I have known many "skepdicks" that were as close-minded as any "Christian" I have ever known. And they tend to be know-it-all assholes that have one view and cannot see around it as well as being frightened by the fact that everything cannot be reduced to a single ideology (theirs)."

That's not a property of skepticism, that's something all humans are known to do. If a skeptic is being closed minded to valid information, that's their problem. After all, it's not like you've never been closed minded, or a know-it-all.

"Proud, cocky, and arrogant about the little tiny truths they have learned ignoring whole FIELDS of inquiry!"

Like what?

I've seen all the bullshit shows. I think everyone should watch it.

Yeah, it's very entertaining, but it's shocking how much money people make with 100% bullshit.

Ganja they have shown em here before, just very rarely.

It's a great show I liked the one when they used a rigged truck and ran over either pen or teller's head(cant remember) or the one where the magician goes in a box and appears somehwere else(they used a see thru stage to show the scam)

"magic" pisses me of because it isn't... well magic, plus its an important part in many pagans lifes so I think it is downright insulting.

You must be thinking of a different show, Bullshit is not about magic.

""magic" pisses me of because it isn't... well magic, plus its an important part in many pagans lifes so I think it is downright insulting."

Magicians don't claim to actually be performing magic. However, they are practicing the same kinds of tricks and illusions that people claimed for generations actually were magical, and made lots of money doing so.

Anyways, I'm still curious as to what fields of inquiry skeptics completely ignore.

The bottled water one is pretty funny. They first explain how most bottled water is no safer than tap water, and then go to a restaurant, fill up a bunch of bottles with water from a hose, and have a "water steward" let customers sample them. They all say they're great, and give different critiques on the different bottles, until they're told it was all just the same tap water.

What is the passive smoking program about?

I don't know about anything about the health risks, but it's bloody annoying having to be in a smoke filled room. In that sense passive smoking isn't bullshit.

I haven't seen that episode yet. I'll bet it tackles the idea that second hand smoke is worse for you than regular smoke, which is definately bullshit.

Where are you from? Britain maybe? I've never heard second hand smoke referred to as "passive smoking" before.

This isn't to say that skepticism is a bad thing.

I think everyone should be as skeptical as they can be.

I also think skepticism walks hand in hand with know-it-allism. Proud, cocky, and arrogant about the little tiny truths they have learned ignoring whole FIELDS of inquiry!

Using basic algebraic reduction, your statements can be combined without really changing meaning to:

"I think everyone should be proud, cocky, and arrogant and this isn't necessarily a bad thing."

The proof is in the pudding.

Yeah, that sounds like bullshit.

About "passive smoking".. I actually copied it from Ganja earlier in the thread, but we do use "passiv r?yking" over here (Norway).
