king oyster on lime pasteurized straw

So i'm giving this lime a shot. Don't have any fuel pellets so i'm doing a king oyster log to start since i have 5 colonized jars. I made two pails with,
2kg straw 140g gypsum ~7% 100g organic espoma garden fertilizer ~%5 20g lime ~1% (edit: 60g actually works better, read 2nd+3rd post) two bricks to hold down straw small squirt of dawn dish soap ~1tsp placed lid on top and filled with water
I plan to drain the water into a pail and save for further use. Ill check the PH about an hour in and again tomorrow with my PH pen and adjust the lime as needed. There shouldn't be much runoff as the straw will absorb most of the water.

Ok so i already see a change for next time. I should have made a lime water solution in a separate pail then pour the solution into pails. I went and drained the liquid twice to ensure an even distribution of lime and measured ph. I was at 9 so i added another 20g per pail to the drained off water. After mixing i was at 11.8 so i filled the pails back up and allowed it to sit for 5 min then drained again. The water is now reading 11.4 ph so ~40g of lime per pail seems close, ill test it again later tonight.

Lets make that 60g lime. After more reading i realized 12 was my goal. 60g per pail has me at 12.2 ph.

I was thinking of doing pics but as of right now its a pail with a lid on it and a 1/2 hole for a vent/fill hole. I'll post pics tomorrow when i drain and spawn.

So i jumped the gun a bit and decided to drain after 8 hours. I'll let them drain overnight so i can spawn anytime tomorrow. I just cracked one corner of the lid and propped them onto empty pails. This stuff really smells caustic! Rubber gloves tomorrow for sure!

Spawned with 6 qts or 2600G of millet spawn. Total weight 45 lbs which shows me an 8 hour soak with lime and soap hydrates practically just as well as a 24 hour soak and 90 min hot bath pasteurization. My similarly sized hot bath logs weigh 44 and 47 lbs using the same amount of straw. I wonder if the lime helps break down cell walls and hydrate faster as i've noticed previously shorter soap soaks weigh less than my 24 hour soaks. Now we wait! Hopefully no more than a week from the high spawn rate.

Personally I forecast mould - but happy to be proved wrong! KO does not rip through sub like a grey or pink. Do I understand you used 2.6kg spawn for 18kg sub ?

Watch and we will see! Yes that ratio is about what i used, around 8% spawn rate. It's millet so the seeds are much finer than most other spawns for more inoculation points. If this goes well next log i'll try 10% wheat bran with the mix, maybe even a few handfuls of wood pellets? Probably pitch a few more jars of spawn in as well. Worth a shot if all goes well with this log... fingers crossed.

Mine were made 20.10.

And this is the worst part of the worst bag. But it was fully colonized day 10.
And I also found first pins, I wouldn't found them if I weren't taking picture for ya. I'm suprised to see them because they were at 20+ degrees celsius, sun through window tho.

Got to push the envelope lol. If bran supplements works for other people with cold water lime pasteurized pellets, I don't see why it wouldn't work on straw.

So to keep this going i have a new pail soaking tonight. I used the runoff from yesterday's batch. Two pails worth of runoff gave me about 3 gallons, that was enough to fill one straw pail. I let it soak for 30 min then drained and checked the PH for lime addition. It took 40g of lime to hit 12 ph again. I also cut the rim off a lid to make a disc that holds down the straw better. This pail will make a ~22 lb blue oyster log. Ill drain it in the morning to spawn later that evening.

I use 21kg spawn for 210kg of sub to give a spawn rate of 10%...
