Anyone use Gentamicin Eye Drops?

Where I live there are Gentamicin Eye-drops to treat eye-infections. It says Gentamicin-sulfate but nothing else. Does anyone have experience with this? Or know if this eye-drops with its chemicals will work to fight bacteria?
I'll use it for agar with sandwich tech.

Shroom supply sells a little vial of gent for twenty bucks. It's enough to do a lot of plates. Works for sure.
As for the eye drops. Probably would work. But you need to do the potency math
-------------------- Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I've never used this one but I have used antibiotics for tropical fish in my agar with success. There's a bunch of different brands but they each have either one of 2 active antibiotics. I can't recall which one it is you go with since it's been a while but Google had a bunch of info on both tetracycline and whatever the other antibiotic is.
Edit: there's a few saddle shops that carry Gentamicin over the counter. Could be something worth checking out.

I don't think this worked, honestly. Might be my calculations. I'll try it again and post the calculations.

Eye drops are compounded in sterile conditions they may contain preservatives that could damage growing mycelium.

Gentamiacin itself will inhibit mushroom mycelium if used in too great a quantity. Antibiotics are fungal metabolites which in addition to fighting off and halting bacteria, also will retard other competitor fungi.

Macrolide are derived from bacteria not fungus, regardless there are some macrolide that exhibit antifungal activity this could crossover to Genta in high doses.

Can anyone please check my calculations for gentamicin. I have no lab experience, and limited mycology experience. This "experiment" might help others.
I got the gentamicin eyedrops.
Following Roger Rabit's suggestion from this thread.
Quote:
Use 10mg gentamicin sulfate for half a liter agar.
= half a liter is 500ml
I used 250 ml agar, thus I should put 5mg gentamicin.
---
Now it gets tricky. The eyedrop bottle says 3mg/ml .03%
So 2ml of this eyedropper liquid gets me 6mg of gentamicin, which is near the amount RR recommended.
That's exactly what I did.
2ml of gentamicin eyedrops for 250ml agar, keeping in mind that the gentamicin eyedrop bottle said 3mg/ml .03%
Anyone?

I have read a thread on this years ago, but what if you use cubensis own metabolites, collected lets say from an overly colonized spawn jar, do you think it would work well as an antibiotic agar additive?

Not really, you can't PC it, nor will it be as effective as antibiotics like gentamiacin or tetracycline. There is a reason we don't use cubensis metabolites as antibiotics, simply put there are other species that can do the job better.

Well this experiment bombed. Bacterial blotches all over the place.
Maybe that .03% means more than what I can fathom atm.

Unless I did it wrong? I just transfered the infected flesh into the new agar + gentamicin. Didn't do a hot pour. It should have still prevented the bacteria splotches right?

It should halt the bacteria. If you see the bacteria spread it was ineffective. I doubt that the concentration you get from eyedrops is going to do a whole lot for you.

It was worth a shot.
Anyways the spiders should index this for the next generation of people wondering about gentamicin eyedrops. For me, it failed. But maybe you can up the concentration? Good luck.
I'm heading towards tetracycline.

ive used them in the eye before. but not as an addition to agar. worth a try if you can get them over the counter.
