Any idea what on my peruvian?
    #22450458 - 10/29/15 06:38 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys real quick I was just wondering if anyone might know what this is. I noticed these maybe pencil eraser size and smaller brown dots on one of my cactus about a month ago. I didn't see any bugs and it looked a lot like some stress blemishes my other cactus get on occasion so I shrugged it off. I checked on it yesterday and it deffinetly seems to of progressed a good bit and just started to spread to a neighboring bridgesii. The brown spots are a lot heavier where the plant is close to two pups.

Anyways appreciate the help everyone, take it easy

That's what I thought at first, nothing really scratched of with any ease. Just seems like little blemishes at first. Hmm what would you think is a proper treatment for such a problem? I think I've read somewhere about possibly applying rubbing alcohol to the scale?

Out on a limb here - any insects in the soil?

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

I haven't noticed anything. The soil is always pretty dry and I'm on a 3rd story balcony so I figure that limits my pest problem a bit. Only insect related thing I find are some spider webs in between spines but that very normal for my cacti.

That screams "fungal" for me, and it isn't looking good. I'd isolate that plant (and the neighbour T. bridgesii)and look for a systemic fungicide, it seems to be sub-cuticular and a simple misting with copper sulphate probably won't do zip - but you can always try before you find a big gun. Act fast.

(do you have access to a binocular, high power loupe?)

Yes, looks very much like a fungal infection - of which there are more varieties than we would like to imagine.
But I think I would just bin it - immediately - the whole thing - NOW.  I would just hate for that to spread any further in my collection.

Thanks for the input guys. My best guess was it was a bacterial or fungal thing. Well thats crummy news, it's not actually my cactus, it's like the first plant gift I ever gave my wife so she's really not gonna wanna lose it haha hmm I'll do my best to segregate it from the rest and try a few topical remedies to see if it helps. Hopefully I don't have to toss it but that was my gut instinct :frown:

One last question I promise. Is there a possibility that something causing this problem would be in the soil and if so is there any good remedy anyone is aware of?

One would have to un pot the cactus and inspect the roots to see if there's a problem below. I can't think of anything that would cause this except a fungal/bacterial infection. It could of also been splashed with some substance that caused a reaction to the epidermis? Anything like that happened recently?

I have a T. scopulicola that has similar blemishes, except mine are more Brown going to Black, than White. I left mine alone, gave no water and the spots have stopped occurring on the new growth. You may have luck with that approach or, if it's an aggressive infection, it could rapidly deteriorate. Monitor it and act accordingly.
