Millet is the best substrate. Read my growlog (Blowin Up GT's on White Millet) and try it. The technique used in the growlog has always lead me to success...

There are different methods used by people but I have realized that each method has advantages and disadvantages dependent on the brand of grain so I'd advice you to try different methods with your millet and see which is best for yours. If you fail by one then it's may be because of your millet ;never give up, it is worth it for sure!

NOT Hulled if you ar using it as a grain.

Hulled if you are going to grind it into a flour for the PF Tek style cake.

whole grains are much easier to prepare IMO than BRF, colonize faster, and are more nutritious (i think). birdseed is a good source. get a brand without fungicides or supplements and without corn or sunflower in it. it should be mostly millet. works great. there is a tek at fungifun.org for polyfil filters. they've always worked for me. my basic tek is:

1. prepare jar lids with filters.
2. rinse seed and soak for 12-24 hours.
3. rinse seed and load jars half full.
4. pressure cook for 1 hour at 15 PSI.
5. as soon as pressure is down, open PC and shake jars.
6. allow jars to cool overnight.
7. inoculate and shake again.

I think they are. Finch seed often has some sunflower seeds.
