Curious noob to cultivation
    #22447968 - 10/29/15 06:39 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hey all you shroom experts! I'm new to this so Im using a kit. A friend used the same company and It turned out pretty darn well, so I wanted to have a go. It wasn't exorbitantly priced like many either which is nice, and they seem to have some real good customer service.

I'm having some fun already, been ventilating and misting as told, and maintaining the temp with my heat mat. Not too hot though. I was just curious if you guys had any tips for a noob on these kits that the manufacturers may have left out, problems I might be at more risk of having, or how to avoid things such as those.

I do a lot of labwork so I am sticking to keeping everything as free from contaminants as I can, but I'd really like to get a few flushes my first go as they claim to be decently sized with this kit. They were when my friend did it.

My kit is an XL Treasure Coast, I think 2100 CL? O.o I'll have to check that volume. Here is a pic of what I'm looking at, bearing in mind it's only been 2 days. ^_^

I'm unsure what I'm really asking, or if i'm asking too little/too much, but any advice would definitely be appreciated. Forgive my noob demeanour, and hopefully I'll learn a lot here!

Also If that photo is too big, somone let me know and ill take it down or resize it.

Thanks! ^_^

Kits have pretty bad reputation. Ain't trying to jinx it or anything, but my advice would be to keep it simple, do some PF tek, agar after that.

Thanks, yeah I have been a little worried about their reputation, but Ive just been trying to be as careful as I can.

On  the subject of PF Tek, it does say the substrate is vermiculite, perlite and rye, and I kinda trust this company, as my freinds grow went really well for him, its more the waiting to see whether its working or not that kills me XD

I just imagined that there were probably a few things to look out for that the company might not have bothered to mention.

I am having some fun with it still though, and after years of lurking on here I finally joined! >_>

looks like its coming along... I would do some modifications to that bag tho just to increase the amount of FAE it receives as the filter patches on the bags don't allow nearly enough FAE to support a good flush check out this link about grow kits and why they suck just to get a feel for what you need to overcome stop bying growkits thread there is a very good pic of a grow kit very similar to yours(maybe the same) starving/dying from lack of fae and the heat pad isn't helping you any I would go ahead and remove it they are for keeping reptiles or plant clones warm not for mushrooms which is also explained in that thread I believe. either way welcome to the shroomery  make sure to take a few prints from that kit so you can start your next grow good luck:mushroom2:

Thanks man, i'll read up on how to do those prints. I'd love to do a proper grow with some large tubs after christmas, the materials seperate looks like you could get so much more out! >_>

'Tis my first time though so just want it to go well and learn some things.

About the FAE, it says open the bag for a few minutes a day to ventilate and spray the sides, but would it help the FAE to open it to ventilate more often?

Cheers again, its really interesting ^_^

build a proper sgfc and it might turn out OK.
that bag wont give the conditions they want. (no matter what the company said)

If he cut some slits in the bag and kept up with the misting so it
doesn't dry out, there is no reason that the bag should not work as a
fruiting chamber.

Hell back when I first started, I did all my grows in bags. I'll try
to find a pic of one right now

Ok this is the only one I could find

As you can see, You can grow just fine out of bags as long as you keep
up with the misting and don't let your little dudes dry out. All my
grows used to be done in myco bags like this one.

Cheers for all the advice guys, I was won dering, where should I put slits on the bag, and doesn't that make it easy for them to get contaminated?

Also, the company says spray the sides of the bag every day, but don't spray the substrate, is that right or would it be better to spray the substrate, or both? O.o

Thanks ^_^

Put a few slits at substrate level and a few like three or four inches
up from substrate level. Fully colonized sub is extremely contam
resistant. If that is fully colonized, cut the slits, if it still has
some time before it is fully colonized, then wait till it is at 100%, then
fruit by cutting the slits in it and misting.

Mist the substrate directly, those kit makers have no idea what they are
talking about

its the substrate that needs water, the bag dont grow mushrooms.
a sgfc will always perform better than those bags, you can grow just fine in vitro without almost any FAE but that doesnt mean you should do it.

this dude threw his cakes in the trash can and they still fruited, still doesnt make a trash can a good or even decent FC.

I used to like bags because I would do 1qt spawn in each one and if
1 ever got contaminated, I didn't lose alllll of my eggs to one basket, ya know?

After a while, I realized that it was just too much work setting up all
those bags, and extremely wasteful because they can't be reused very well.

Tubs for the win, but bags will work if you have
nothing else

It's one of the ones where the mycelium has already developed from the spores and you just let it soak for 12 hours before growing, or so they say.

Does that mean it's colonized? Also, I can just put the slits in with a thin knife can't I?

That's mad that they'd tell people not to mist the substrate directly if thats what works. I guess it makes people buy more if less grow.

Sorry for so many questions too by the way. I knew it'd be good to learn about growing on here. I think i'll do some slits and get the box some fresh air hopefully, and look after it, see how it goes. With any luck it shouldn't go any worse than without more fresh air.

I'd love to do a proper one maybe after christmas, already have a decent tub. Some of these teks on here look on the ball for quality and quantity to me, and if anyone I'm going to trust the advice from here more than a vendor! ^_^

Take a spore print when you fruit it.

And then move to bulk growing.

Say, it's only on one or two teeny grains of rye, but there seems to be something dark blueish green on them, anyone got any ideas as to what it is? There are also some very small speckles of it around those grains and on a little rock of perlite.

The top of the substrate is now also getting a very thin covering of the mycelium that seems to have took over the rest of the substrate away from the surface. Hopefully it'll carry on! ^_^

Seeing as it was very very small, I sterilised a knife and removed the little pieces of verm rye and perlite that had it on, hopefully its should stay away. I had a suspicion it might have been blue-green mold, but there wasn't nearly enough for me to tell.  Mycelium brusing? O.o
