I voted no, as I will not give money to somebody asking for it. Our local strip-mall is filled with them. I hate when somebody walks up to me asking for an "extra" dollar while I am putting away my groceries, some are pretty aggressive.
However, if I see somebody down and out just sitting around not asking for shit, I have walked up and handed people $20. I do it on my terms, not some asshole saying "Hey, do you have money"

No there is no such thing in the US.

Hundreds? It's £73 a week, or £57 if you're under 25. That will only buy 2 dozen cans of high strength lager. For a whole week.

Typically not. I'll do it as a spur of the moment type thing every now and then. Usually it's to someone who isn't asking for it. The people with signs on the street I dunno, just feel like that goes to drugs 90% of the time, and I in no way whatsoever want to support the drug trade and the thug-douchebags behind it.

If I go downtown where there are like 50 of them in a row, I don't give shit.
But when there's that one guy asking, I'll give him a handful of change.

It's a mood dependent thing for me. If they catch me at the right time, and are not too aggressive, i can be generous. There is a buddhist tradition of begging- so this has influenced me to become more generous. Often spiritual guides are seen in different traditions as homeless beggars for some reason, so it's better to be safe than sorry- but i don't like to give in situations when i feel that i am a captive audience. this can feel abusive, and it is better to discourage this type of behavior.
I once woke a guy up that was sleeping on the street to give him a $20. I was drunk.

It was a drop of water on someone’s kitchen table: an instant between the action of spilling and some future cleaning-up. Or, perhaps, the earth is a barnacle on a rock, formed between two waves; an event of no significance, then, created in a vacuum between the ebb and the flow of some unthinkable, unimaginable sea."-- TL
