Pf Tek - From spore to bulk and the elimination of the SGFC 5

Skills Necessary:
Basic knowledge of agar - (this is required only if you want to clean up your spore syringe on agar but the benefits are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Would you do an hours work now to save working a month straight later? This is that kind of situation)

====================================================================================================
Your Checklist:
Vermiculite Whole Brown Rice Wide Mouth Half Pints Spores / Spore Syringe Mixing Bowls Lighter or other flame sterilization tool Tinfoil Gloves Iso (70%) Paper Towel Polyfil Coffee Grinder Strainer A Big Bucket Coir Gypsum (optional) Pressure Canner (you can steam them too, but just spend the money.) Drill or Hammer + Small Nail Your Tubs (anything really, I like 60-70qt the best) Garbage Bags (I use painters drop sheets to make my liners) Drill + 1.5 inch hole saw ( or something to make 1.5inch dia holes with ) -- Still Air Box (If you arn't going straight spore syringe to jar) Pasty/Other Agar Plates (If you arn't going straight spore syringe to jar) Syringe of Sterile Water (If you arn't going straight spore syringe to jar)
====================================================================================================
1) Clean up your spores on agar.
((SKIP TO STEP TWO IF YOU ARE DOING A STRAIGHT MS SPORE SYRINGE GROW))
While following your own personal sterile technique take a drop of spore solution or a small amount of spores on a sterile tool or inoculation loop and put it on your pasty plate inside of your still air box.

Put the plate in a safe place .

As soon as you start to have good clean growth you are going to want to transfer. If you don't mind doing an MS grow and just want to make sure the spores are clean you can keep growing out the plate you started with and later turn it into your LI(liquid inoculate).
Start
  Bacteria

One transfer

I transfer until I have clean and even growth, and then let it colonize the plate about 80%. Then you are ready to make your LI.
 (agar ready to be made into LI)
In your cleaned and prepped SAB, have your colonized plate ready to go.

Flame your needle of the syringe of sterile water and wipe it with an alcohol wipe.

Pop the lid on your plate and first "pressure wash" the colonized area using a bit of the water and some pressure from the syringe.

Then use the needle tip to slurry the entire top layer of your plate, and draw what you can back up into the syringe. Do this a few times until you have a good amount of plate inside your syringe.

((Use gloves for this process please))
I like to use 30 cc syringes with a slightly higher gage tip to make it easier to draw the slurry back into the syringe. This stuff is great though, you will be impressed with the speed of it. One drop per inoc point. It last's a while in the fridge too.
====================================================================================================
2) Make your jars.

These videos are readily available online but here you go:
The only mod you make to the jars is 4 inoculation points with the hammer and nail. I like the plastic lids, and I used a drill.

The recipe is 1 cup brown rice flour, 1 cup water, 2 cups vermiculite for 4 cakes. Multiply this for however many you need.

Take your whole brown rice and grind it up in the coffee grinder. Make it pretty fine but no need to go overboard.

Measure and add to mixing bowl with the water and vermiculite and mix it up well by hand. I like to use a sort of scoop and sift motion to mix it all up well, make sure you get all the fine stuff out of the very bottom and sides. You want this mix light and fluffy, you shouldn't be compacting it at all.

Add this to your half pints til you're a half inch from the top. Try not to be messy, you're going to have to wipe down the half inch of rim you have left with a dry paper towel.

Add your dry vermiculite barrier. Don't go too overboard here either or the lid is going to compact it down when you put it on your jar.

Wrap the top in tinfoil

Pressure Cook(buy a pc, check craigslist or something) / Steam Sterilize) 1hr45m at 15 psi is what I do.

Let them cool overnight and then move them over to your SAB. You can wipe down the bottoms quick with a paper towel because they might be a little bit wet.
====================================================================================================
3) inoculation
Flame your needle tip outside the SAB and wipe it with an alcohol wipe in between jars and before you start. Also prep your SAB and follow your sterile procedures.

Remove the foil one at a time and insert the syringe and do a drop of solution per hole.
Wow that was tough.
====================================================================================================
4) The waiting game
Make your monotubs during this time

credits to SpitballJedi
I don't go as high tek with the magnetic covers et al but you definitely want a liner.
Jars Colonizing

When they are done you need to make your CVG (coir verm gypsum)
====================================================================================================
5) The CVGv's
1 Brick Coir, 2 Quarts Verm, 5 Quart rolling, boiling water (cheaper coir uses less water ime, I use 4.5 quarts on my brand.)
Put your coir brick in a bucket
Put 2 quarts verm in the same bucket

Put 4-5 quarts BOILIN water in bucket

Cover the bucket with a lid and let it sit for 2 hours wrapped in a blanket to retain heat.

Mix up, and add a handful of Gypsum and mix again.
Let it sit wrapped up until the next day. Do not mix your spawn with hot cvg.
====================================================================================================
6) Onto the Tubs
When your mix has cooled, it's time to prep your fully colonized PF jars.
Crack em open and remove the dry verm.

Take your cheese grater (I use the biggest hole pattern) and shred em all up.

Add water and let soak for 10-15 mins.
Strain off.

Take all but a small amount of your bulk sub that you're going to use (leave a bit for a casing layer) and put it into a fresh garbage bag.
Add your shredded, hydrated, cakes.

Shake it like a newborn baby.

Add to desired level in your monotub.
******I now put a medium amount of polyfil into all holes at spawning and don't wait for colonization******
====================================================================================================
7) Again with the waiting.
Wait for 100% colonization. With this method, this actually happens usually within 48 hours even with a small amount of spawn because of how finely grated it ends up.
 (this is after 24 hrs recovery, 2.5qts spawn to a 70qt tub)
At 100% you can either case it or fruit it now. I recommend casing. (1/4 inch casing layer)
 (minitub)
If you do case you put the lid back on and wait for the casing to be about 30% colonized, you then patch the colonized parts with a bit more casing and put into fruiting conditions.
 (this tub is ready to be patched and fruited)
====================================================================================================
8) You are home free.
You will learn to recognize what your shrooms need and when, whether or not you should mist and things of that nature. But this is pretty much the part where you sit back and wait for them to start popping up.
I think grains still throw out better shrooms overall.
I threw out my SGFC, but I still like to do cakes. Pretty foolproof.
Thanks to everyone at the shroomery who has helped me.
Let me know if I need to add anything.
(EQ Multispore) (5 half pints spawn)
  -- (EQ cleaned up on agar)(10 half pints spawn)
     -- (B+ Clone)(11 half pints spawn)
     -- (B+ Multispore)(12 half pints spawn)

Nice write up. I was thinking the other day it would be great if someone did one on spawning cakes to bulk. It's a very good transition for someone who wants to try their hand at bulk, liking the LI also

Go with the Exo terra plantation soil brick instead. Less sticks and rocks, and I hear a lot of TC's prefer it over the eco earth brand.
