Scott's Sierra nature scapes- Are a mixture of Douglas fir and hardwoods - which are perfect for fungal growth, I usually use Scott's Sierra woodchips as an indicator for actives when I'm hunting

dyed is fine as long as it isnt' fresh, sometimes it just needs to sit for a couple years

Don't mean to derail, but do woodchips need to be pasteurized before being put in a patch?

Depending on the species , for example, I know ps. Cyanescens/Allenii won't colonize cedar/or/redwood- bark , because those trees are high in resin contents. And as stated by cronicr-the chips should be old , therefore decayed, well ,actually I beleive the mycelium decays the woodchips , but decaying is the intended purpose , then feeding the patch new food(chips once it looks decayed.
I've made an outdoor bed of Allenii but unforutnaly , I haven't been watering often enough so I don't think shrooms are going to fruit this year. Woodlovers love being wet , just like my wood loves beings wet .. just by different liquids.
I"d reccomend that you pour like 50 plates of agar and use a print to find a clean culture , then transfer the wedge a few times until the plate looks how you want it to, then scapel it into a grain jar. From the grain jar i used Scott's red woodchips and hydrated sawdust pellets.
I've always soaked/birthed my woodchips with water for atleast 24 hours before mixing spawn , that way they're moist and ready for colonizing.
I'm not sure if your planning to do an outdoor bed ; or a bed inside tote bins/flower pots- which are able to be brought inside for xtreme freezes and kept outside during fruiting times. I know for fact, Allenii and Cyanescens have been cultivated in Michigan by HumboldtBob.

i know this may seem like a catch 22 but it isn't they dyed stuff needs to sit for awhile, if your using regular chips ya want them fresh though

Wait, so what exactly is bad about having fresh chips if they happen to be dyed?

Yes,I'll be doing outdoor beds.some I'll tend some left to the sprinklers and landscapers to unknowingly tend.I've collected some ryzomorphic mycelium from the most active part of my current bed Wich went in April and is producing with no care from me(except love and kind words)I'll be using that and looking for the Wisconsin azure person to beg or whatever a print from.peace!@
