ID request - PNW Amanita(?)
    #22446458 - 10/28/15 08:17 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

What have I got myself into here? I was out collecting cyans, and found all these. don't know much about amanita. quick research shows these look about right; but I know there are members of the family that are poisonous. Still not 100% sure if I will consume these if they are the proper species; but it would be nice to have the powder around after drying in case I get the balls to try them.

4 specimins (3 single specimins and one large group of same species). these may all be the same, but being amanita; gotta make sure lol.

Habitat: Pacific Northwest (Seattle). Picked after/during rain.

specimen A, B, and D were in woodchips at the foot of a tree, directly under it (separate trees). Specimin group C was in a mulchy area, also by some large trees but not directly at the foot.

Gills:
White, broken veil still attached to specimin A and Group C. Specimin B has Gill, but immature.

Stem:
White, solid, thick. Crunches when snapped. (all 4)

Cap:
orangish red; white spots on top
(all 4)
Spore print color:
Will take tonight, but visual inspection of gills looks white/clear.

Bruising:
None

Specimin A

Specimin B

Specimin Group C
(I believe these are all the same species; for this reason i have closeups only of the most perfect looking cap. PLEASE let me know if I am mistaken!.

Specimin D

Please let me know if any more details or images are required; I want to be 100% of an identification before I even think of consumption.

also, anyone have tips on preparation methods? as it stands; I plan to peel the skins and attempt to smoke them to see if it works. And with the rest of the caps/stems I plan on following the Shroomery Info guide of drying in oven, powdering, and then making tea. (all assuming these are proper actives and not the extreme poisonous cousins)

also; what is shroomerys concensus on amanitas? I'm finding a lot of mixed reviews ranging from them being an amazing trip, to them just making people sick. Anyone have experiences that are good/bad to report?

Muscaria aren't good for your brain or liver, read up on ibotenic acid. Even with correct preparation, trace amounts still exist in the fruit.

I've heard it compared to alcohol in how it feels. It's not a hallucinogenic officially, more a deliriant.

Something to try if you like but make sure you're well informed - I'd also advise against ever smoking any mushroom.

I thought muscaria were supposed to have the concentric rings at the base?

Noticeable in B and C if you look closely. The volva seems to be missing in A (perhaps from how it was picked) and the angle of D doesn't show us enough to notice this trait.

I always enjoyed these as an edible, but they were cooked well before consumption.  I have only noticed anxiolytic effects from consuming a 1.5-2grms dried Amanita persicina, but that might have been placebo.

I would not recommend any Amanita be consumed for recreational purposes.  I would like to try drinking some urine from myself after consuming some just to see what the effects are, I read that's how the ancients did it and am intrigued by this.
