Thin mycelium. Monotub Ready to Fruit? (Pics)
    #22446141 - 10/28/15 06:44 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hey Guys,

I am new to the shroomery so I am doing my best to learn all the guidelines and follow protocol. I apologize in advance if I mess something up.

Hopefully you can see the images below of this monotub which has some brf cakes of PE broken up and spawned to coir and vermiculite.

It has been colonizing for a little over two weeks and the coir seemed to be fully covered a couple days ago. My main concern with this is that the mycelium looks a little thin. Is this tub ready to be fruited or should I wait for the mycelium to thicken up?

Fruit it now. The surface looks fully colonized and two weeks is more than enough time. Make sure to dial those holes in with poly really good. Bottom holes really tight, and top holes significantly looser (almost falling out). And give it a good misting while you're at it, it could use the extra moisture, the surface is looking bone dry.

The thinness of the mycelium is most likely from a lack of proper moisture content of your bulk sub. Prepping your mix too dry during spawning will cause major delays in colonization and the mycelium will be weakened as a result.

Yea I was worried about the moisture content as it was colonizing. I read on some posts that it is hard to make the substrate too dry and most often people make it too wet. I guess I still managed to do so. I will run out and buy some poly and get that sucker fruiting, thanks.

Yeah I've had tubs that looked the same exact way. I would over-squeeze the mix trying to get it to field capacity.

It's better to have a light stream flowing from your hand when you squeeze the mix rather than a couple of drops. That's how you know the mix has the proper moisture content.

Pretty much, as long as the mix isn't soaking wet, the mycelium will colonize it just fine. It still takes a bit of practice and trial runs to find that perfect moisture content tho.

Well what i'm realizing from this hobby is its all about experience. I try and look up as much info on this stuff as I can before doing it but things like this need to be learned first hand.

I have got the poly in now guna give it a quick misting and hope for the best!

Very true indeed. And be careful not to over-mist your tub. You want to avoid any pooling on the surface. You just want the surface to look like it's glistening with tiny beads of water droplets.

After the first flush is done, you can dunk your tub to replenish the dry sub and hopefully get a stronger second flush! Here's a great tek for that http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20710363/fpart/1/vc/1

:goodluck:

I really appreciate all the advice. I have noticed some mis-information swapped throughout these forums but you sir seem to know exactly what I was looking for.

Not to say i'm an expert by any means but you have been very helpful. Thanks again!
