Have you ever found perfect roommates?

I'm thinking about buying a big house and finding some chill roommates to keep me entertained. I live in a big city (Vancouver), how hard do you think it'll be? Any tips on what to look for in a roommate? I'd have a maid come in every week for housekeeping, so if they're slobs, I'll hire a badass mexican maid and get her to deal with the mess. I've never lived with roommates so any tips would help.

Don't make friends of them. You might have to kick them out. The thing is that it's hard to find people who are compatible with your lifestyle. Some people are messy, some people are loud, some people will steal, some people are straight up annoying. I've had numerous roommates, at one point I lived in an apartment with around 10 people at one time. People would come and go. Lots of partying, lots of bullshit, lots of drugs. Good times, but very bad ones too. The worst are the roommates who dodge rent and make excuses, don't be a pushover. Good luck

I think its difficult to find the perfect roommate. I classify the perfect roommate by someone who you have both a good personal relationship with as well as being perfectly compatible with your lifestyle. I've got a roommate right now who fits the 2nd half, in that his lifestyle is completely compatible with mine. Were both a little messy and lazy, but not too messy that the whole place goes to shit, not to anal that the place is spotless. Both of us stay up really fucking late and he smokes. But he's not really a friend either. Were just roommates. I don't really love his personality, hes a bit of a bro for me, but hes chill and we along perfectly fine
I'd suggest interviewing people before you say yes to anyone.

yeah... that's what worries me. I would have to have a strict screening process, ask them a bunch of questions about their lifestyle, values, etc.. and try really hard to get that first impression out of them. I've been told I have good character judgement skills, so maybe that will come in handy. Still though, anything can happen.

pricing is so crazy here in vancouver though. I wouldn't if you are relying on roommates to pay the mortgage, too many flakes that will make excuses for not paying. I own a house in the lower mainland, just bought for 600K. In vancouver it would be around 2 million.

Yeah I definitely don't want to live in the expensive parts of Vancouver. Maybe even Squamish, Surrey, or Langley. I won't be relying on rent payments, so that's a plus. Hell, if I love em enough, I might let them live there for free. Im not even doing this to make money, I just want a rad living space.

I'm in surrey myself, just moved out of Langley. I used to rent a commercial space in Langley that I turned into a rehearsal/recording space. Built an apartment there as well. rent was only 1000/month and I had 3 room mates. We could jam out all night with no neighbours, was fucking great.
Then I had to knock up my gf and get married...

I'd say that roughly 80% of the people out there are definitely great to perfect roommate. 15% of them are bad. 5% are people you have to kick the fuck out.
Overall. Great business if you dont mind living with people.
But you have to learn how to kick people out. At first its hard, but its your house and your rules.
Go for older people. Some students are fine, but its always a gamble. I suggest young professionals. Immigrants are amazing. Especially those from the Middle East.

I was planning on travelling next spring and summer too, so I wont even have a place. I should be able to afford a house rental with like 4 or 5 rooms by next spring, so I could just rent it out and let you guys live thereQuote:

Yeah, it'd be better if we got our own island. If you want a perfect roommate your friends are the best bet. Once your into your 20s though most are already well enough established that it's uneccessary. Goodluck though, if you've ever followed patlas posts you should know most roommates you find through ads are total shit heads.
EDIT: aaaand I'm out.

Finding a "perfect" roommate is pretty fucking hard.
I've had shitloads of roommates. If I sat and counted.. probably over 40-50 in all the different places I've lived.
Finding the "perfect" match, is maybe 1 in 100. Someone who matches with your lifestyle, pays rent on time, doesn't trash the place, doesn't cause drama, doesn't steal, or eat everyone's food.... someone with all those qualities is rare. Good luck. Having a maid will help. But there's still lots of other variables.

Yah good luck. My only roommate for 4 years of college was my best friend since 3rd grade so after the initial first 3 months of actually getting to know how each other lived and over arguing over stupid shit we never had much of a problem for 3.8 years.
The hardest part about roommates is lifestyle differences. My roomie was an absolute clean freak. Beyond normal. I like a clean place but he once scrubbed our floors with a toothbrush. Now this was just an apartment we rented for 2 semesters. I had to get it through to him that we didn't own the place and we would be leaving anyways so there's no need to upkeep this place like it's your first house.
Crazy like that shit happens. We obviously never had payment problems because we never mismanaged our money but I've seen that happen to so many people. You really got to check these people for competency especially if the sole weight of the pay lies on you. I had everything in my name besides the internet and trusted my friend 100% because he's basically the craziest jew non-jew I know and saves like a fucking lunatic.
I watched one of my friends rotate through roommates. Some were down right crazy, this one kid would get wasted and start crying and one time smashed up his entire room, the door, mirror, and walls. Luckily each person was only responsible per room. He also got insane islamic nuts that hated having people over, I've basically seen it all.
Get someone who matches your personality and you should be fine.

Jesus, lots of pessimism. Every roommate will have their own little quirks and all, but overall, most people are good people.
Of course if you seek out people with similar interests than you guys (drug abuse) then clearly you are setting yourselves up to ffail...

Ya most people are good people. But dude was asking about the "perfect" roommate. Most are not perfect. I've had some nightmare roommates, a couple perfect ones, but most people fall somewhere in the middle.
I don't mind insane clean freaks as long as they keep that shit to themselves... I like a relatively clean place but I'm not scrubbing the damn floors with a toothbrush
But yeah on the overall... roommates fucking suck

This summer I had perfect roommates. One of them was my best friend and the other was this girl I met who moved in a few weeks after we started fucking.
We had a great system going, everyone was go-with-the-flow, no one ever complained and we had a great household going. We would all wake up around the same time every morning, blast some music and clean up the household while one of us made breakfast. We shared the grocery bill and nearly every meal. It was perfect. Oh you don't want to cook today? That's fine, i'll make dinner tonight
I never knew what a good roommate was until I Experienced that, it was a very community based living situation. In fact, i'd say it was more like a family than anything. We did so many things together as well.
Now though, I live with my roommate from last year and she is a total pain in the ass. She hates my music and complains every time I play it. Actually, she complains about every little thing. " You left a beer bottle on the table! The house is a mess! You woke me up this morning! "
She generally just likes to rage about stupid little things that don't matter. She does not go with the flow at all. The kicker? She doesn't do a god damn thing in the household. All she does is smoke pot, watch tv, and somehow manage to use 7 cups a day. 7 cups that I end up cleaning. One morning before school I started doing the sink full of dishes that she said she would do 2 days prior, and she comes out and asks me not to do dishes in the morning because she was sleeping... like bitch please you said you would do them, you didn't, so now i'm doing them. I'm not gonna wait for your lazy ass to get to it.
So yes, there is such a thing as perfect roommates, but there are also many many awful roommates.
What you should look for is someone with similar:
Cleanliness Hobbies/interests Schedule food tastes ( cooking together is important )
Good luck mate.

Why flame op for a mental illness? Why would someone having schizophrenia be a bad person to live with? You're being awfully judgmental after just asking to live with him.
From this post alone its clear you would be a bad roommate.

I wonder why...
Nothing against him personally, just a instant elimination as roommate material.

Even if it's under control? What do you even know about the disease? There are many, many schizophrenics out there who get along just fine.

Meh, not worth the possibility of extra stress in my life.

We've had some good roommates. Find someone who travels a lot for work.

Squamish would be nice... beautiful country out that way, and it's not too far from van city which is a huge plus. Can't see it getting much better than that in Canada.

Shared the grocery bill? I couldn't even get that to work with my best friend. We basically bought our own shit but I swear to god in all of the 4 years we lived together he cooked food once and ate out/fast food all the time. It was really unbelievable. I myself have always just cooked my own shit. It really made no sense for us to split a bill I guess anyways. We would trade off on coffee and milk and of course we'd let each other use others stuff but if there was like 2 slices of bread left it was the persons who bought it not yours.
I knew people who had roomies who would eat all their shit without remorse. Cooking 20$ worth of their steaks and shit.
I guess it boils down to if you cook a lot or not.

I split the grocery bill with my best friend successfully. He'd get it one cheque. Me the next. We even managed to share weed. Than again we're native so sharing, reciprocating and all that prosocial shits already ingrained in us so it wasn't hard. I find whites are generally really stingy and territorial when it comes to material objects. Most of you start acting like smeagle from lotr when someone touches your shit

Haha, that was a good read I think me and you would get along just fine The fella im living with now is a pretty good guy and we get along pretty damnn well I must say, not any cares and we live healthily. Only problem I can think of is that it is an apartment in a town I dont particularly want to be a part of for so long, and its not a house! Ohh how I long for a tool shed .... one day soon!
Community living is the only way I can take it anymore. People just picking up what they feel they owe, and hopefully everyone can judge themselves pretty good. I can't stand a house divided anymore. Just too cold for this feller.
Cheers, happy homesteading

I agree 100%, I was just out there last weekend for the first time, checked out brackendale too and saw some eagles. It reminds me of the kootenays except you're on the ocean. I came out west to enjoy the mtbiking and nature and it really does not get any better than squamish imo.
