in all of the above, fruited around 30% top layer colonization. when temps are high, a top layer or even a cased bulk tub always get fully colonized. generally speaking, if it does not, its usually in the winter when the temps are lower.
spawn run and fruiting are run about 76-78 degrees. in the dead heat summer, temps get a bit higher with temp spikes. the grow room has to be brought down several degrees in the summer to maintain proper temps inside the grow room. it also doesn't help when dehydrators are going at the same time. its added heat and can add a few degrees.

I use a top layer of substrate over my mixed sub and spawn. 1/2". I must with my tired out PE clone culture.
if I just mix and leave exposed grain on top, I'll get contamination on the exposed grains.
the culture is weak. PE fruiting takes forever .. often too long in my outdoor 'almost open air' conditions.
the top layer of substrate is a must for me in this case.
did I miss your explanation (rationale behind) the top dressing of spawn over the mix and just beneath the top layer of sub.?
uncle rico! hey good to see you around. read this thread by azur. its badass man! this is the new updated to this method.

im about to update my tubs after i harvest these huge flushes. it took me a full hour to harvest AA tub 1. it sux, i had the light source to the side of the tubs. and all the fruits grew sideways. so the fruits got tangled up quite a bit. the light source has since been moved back to its original position.

That was always my issue with top layers, thru a clear liner I could see the whole substrate was colonized but the top would take a much longer time to fully colonize.
Like this tub. The entire substrate was colonized in 5 days but the top layer took over a week, Im just about to fruit it now.
So I spawn my tub, add a 1/4 " top layer and fruit around 30% like a normal casing layer? I like that a lot.
