SFD life?

So jars and lids are pretty easy to know when to retire. They either rust out, warp, or crack/break. What about SFDs? How do you tell when they've ran their useful life? Is there a difference between the synthetic and the cellulose? I've got a bunch that have stained some have completely turned a shade of gray/brown. Some have random stain splotches and some have had mycelium grow into/through them.

do yourself a favor and throw them away. buy the lids and discs from aloha. infinetly better and cheaper too. you can get the lids AND discs for mush cheaper than just the SFDs.

I really like the EzFelt tek, cheap and works great. Made 50+ jars for like $3 in felt and another $3 in silicone.

The usual jar filters available from other mushroom cultivators are a standard laboratory item, made from a synthetic PTFE material. They are really intended only for a single sterilization cycle. Each time the PTFE filters are autoclaved, the pore size increases, leading to greater and greater contamination over time. These Aloha Medicinals cellulose filters on the other hand are good for hundreds of autoclave cycles – with no change in the pore size or filter efficiency. Aloha Medicinals has these filters specially manufactured to our own specification by one of the leading U.S. filter manufacturers.
Oh man that's insane, never knew that about the synthetic discs. The price is pretty damn good to. $25 per lb, 66 wide mouth and 90 regular mouth per lb. To bad they don;t make wide mouth lids. I reckon I'll just stick with the PP lids from the canning section at wal mart for now, but the price for their filters, I think you're right about tossing the ones I have and just ordering more. Hell 66 would last me almost indefinitely. Good time to throw in some of their small sized spawn bags too to save on shipping cost.

don't waste your time with the wide mouthed discs unless you can get their custom lids. They don't fit any lids but their custom made ones. oh and get their pre-stamped lids too, forget wasting time drillin.

Ahh man, the wide mouth jars are so much easier to clean though. They don't have the wide mouth metal lids listed on their site. Can you call them to order them? I saw a dishwasher for $30 at the Habitat for Humanity store the other day, thought about wiring it up and plugging it up in my basement near the utility sink just for jars, if I end up switching to regular mouth jars I might just have to revisit that dishwasher idea.

I haven't cleaned my jars in months. Even some left over spawn chunks ill leave em in there. Your sterilizing so it doesn't need to be clean.

I know lots of people don't, but I've got a pretty high contaminate load in my old house. I also keep my jars on top of the kitchen cabinets so I prefer to keep them clean when not in use so I don't have the appearance of dirty dishes just hanging around.
