Non active, edible, medicinal culture and spore collections needed
    #22442849 - 10/28/15 12:16 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but the gourmet section might be the half right place. Feel free to move it.

I'm trying to locate a spore bank of sorts. I'm interested in mushrooms that aren't necessarily edible. Specifically, I want colorful, textural, interesting, unique species. The kinds we see sometimes in the field and appreciate for their visual elements. I can, and do, collect the ones that are in my area, but I'm not married to only what's local. I am interested in tinkering with cultivation of these for landscape installation and other things. If anyone can point me in that direction, I'd be ever so appreciative.

Most of these cool looking ones have never been successfully cultivated, the ones humans do grow we grow because they proved easy enough for us to do so.

Some slime moulds can find the shortest path through a maze by chemotaxis.

I think that's pretty cool :V

I know about the ahola bank, but it's not what I'm after. Think parrot mushroom, red stropharia, scaly pholiota etc. Slime molds are the shit, but also not what I want.

Even if they've never been successfully cultivated, there has to be some university or something that has a giant spore print collection.

You should go to the rain forest for 6 months and isolate indigenous fungi to test for indole derivatives.

Then when you find a nice, new hallucinogen that isn't illegal yet you could market that as a medical and biological research strain *nods*

I have some scaly pholiota prints and some yellow and orange unicorn entoloma and witch's hat, However probably not enough for your uses. Interesting idea with the landscape mushroom installations, just make sure you use predictable genetics/clones on agar ->spawn material for live installations, not spore to material in wild. Good luck. I'll look into a spore bank we have here in Michigan, may be mainly edible though.

I surround myself with people who aren't afraid to live. They have had what they love most taken from them, be it freedom, love, money, or anything for that matter. When you lose your greatest love you also lose your greatest fear, when that happens you are completely and utterly free.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I did look into the Florida bank but not sure what i missed. Do they still send a catalog or did i overlook a list on the site?

I just got my cult gear all sorted out. Hoping to start playing with some odd things soon. I would only use spores for install if I collected them from my own grows. Wild collection to agar to bulk/slurry/mass spore is the way to go. That being said, I am taking prints as wel as clones from the wild. I dont care if the prints need cleaned up, thats what its all about. Witches hat, enteloma and pholiota are on my list. I have a few pholiota I'm working on already. No scaly though.
