Healthy oyster pinset?
    #22442833 - 10/28/15 12:07 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys

So my straw bags are pinning like crazy in big clusters,
I am unsure if they're healthy looking but they seem to be growing steady every day.

I believe them to be ostreatus but am unsure as it was a clone from a local supermarket. If this is the case then they're fruiting at higher temps than I would have though, 22-28c

Just curious to see what you guys think,

Should I keep them at this temp, or put them into my cool room at roughly 16c

Also should I completely remove the log from the bag or just cut around the clusters?

Thanks guys!

Looks good, I'm no expert but I'd say leave bag on.

Leave the bag on. Mist at least a couple times a day.  Give them lots of FAE and light. In my experience some of those pins will abort, that's just natural. Did you supplement the straw at all?

If you lower the temperatures, their growth rate will slow down, but you should get heavier, denser fruits.

Thanks for your reply guys!

Will begin misting Jim!

I did not sup the straw at all, the whole logs where also crawling with fruit flies for a week after inoculation so i've been worried about larvae eating the  nutrients but no evidence of that so far.

So these lumpy growth clusters are normal? I figured a lot of those would abort.

Im thinking I'll keep one log in the current conditions and move another too the cooler room to see affects.

If they were crawling with flies, you will most likely get worms.  I have troubles with oysters outside, and fungus gnats. This decreases of course with cooler temperatures. And if the worms aren't  too prevalent,  I fry em up and eat the damn things anyway!  Sounds a little gross, but if you harvest wild mushrooms, you might be surprised what you're eating. Besides, it is all natural right? LOL

Oh yeah! I've had spiders hang out by my oysters before. Sometimes big ol' wolf spiders. I cussed them out for not doing a better job!
