After you drill your hole(s) and have your SFD disc ready, take a torch to the area around the hole briefly to soften up and melt the plastic just a little. Then slap on your SFD and hold it there for a second. Then you have a permanently mounted SFD.
Interesting!
Do you think this same procedure could be used for the metal lids? It would save soo much time and stress. Working with silicone is my least favorite part of this hobby.

The idea behind the method I described is to melt the plastic lid enough to get the liquid plastic to ooze into the SFD and lock in place when it cools.
You torch your metal lids and try to apply an SFD I don't think you're going to get much adhesion.

Haha.. melt that metal lid!! Nothing says forever like molten metal.

Those plastic lids seem pretty thick, it'll take a lot of heat to melt it enough for a SFD to adhere to it properly. Think I'll just go the traditional route of metal lids with a SFD glued on with silicone. Why change something that already works, ya know?

Your only heating the surface around the GE hole. It may seem thick, but when you aim a torch at it, it heats up really fast.

it is no different than pasty plates or v tek containers, and i would guess both pasty and violet would tell u pp5's can and will warp in time. the canning lids are only different in that the plastic is thicker, so would take longer to warp in theory.
so its a matter of the grower being conscious of that, if they choose to use them for a prolonged time. some people use them for years, and no issues.
metal will rust. but it will not warp.
I've had traditional metal lids rust. But I've never had plastic containers warp when I cooked properly - specifically, keeping enough water in the cooker. Out of hundreds of containers for many thousand runs in the cooker, I've never had them warp unless I ran out of water. They have been 100% durable long-term unless I make that mistake which isn't their fault.

Wow that's surprising. I never used the taller ones u use, but I still have the shorter ones, and use then for sterilizing centrifuge tubes or cotton balls, and the lids are a bit out of shape, but the container seems fine

Not necessarily a tool, but exited to get these going.
Also finally sourced some gypsum. Believe it or not, it was really hard for me to find. Checked every single store within my area. Had to go two hours out of town for the day and called around while I was there. It's black gypsum, but I don't discriminate.

I used a torch, anvil and a tiney hammer to shape a straight pick into a hook for transferring to and from culture slants. Works pretty good.
