Any way to narrow it down?
Since Omphalotus is now out of the question- are there any other poisonous look alikes?
Part of the reason I'm thinkin' Junonius is because I seemed called to it- felt "laughter" way before I saw 'em. I actually was heading towards a field as I've heard libs grow there; wandered a bit, then heading home- saw these guys.

Gyms are notoriously hard to narrow down without microscopy. Throw them in the fridge uncovered and in a few hours see if there is greenish blue bruising at the bases and in places of damage.

The only thing is- I'm reading that Junonius hardly ever bruise; but that could just be the sources.
They're already pretty old, and gettin' torn up by bugs. So what's in the center, and at the edges? Is it myc?

The safest thing to do would be toss, right?
My intuition keep telling me to make a tea though.

I was gunna say that they didn't look like junonius until I saw the above pic. It's very junonius-like...with that curvature of the cap. You can see the same thing in the following pic taken down here in the Bay area last year. But don't feel bad about having to toss 'em. I don't think they're very active, if at all, in California.

Have you ever sliced off the moldy portion of a piece of cheese or bread- then consumed what remained? How different would it be? (obvi substrate density, but what else?)

Minor genetic differences between east and west coast strains? I'm mainly wondering how active they are compared to other gyms.

I don't think it's known yet why, but if my memory serves correctly, with the exception of one find by a member here (Joust), all specimens of junonius found on the west coast have been inactive, i.e. have had negligible potency.
