I'm pretty sure that I have seen people here using aspen pet bedding for oyster. I just use fuel pellets, because they are readily available and pretty cheap.

I am using Aspen, not sawdust but wood chips and logs, for oysters.
I am just getting started, so I have not have dem fruiting yet, but it seems to colonize quite well.
From what I have read, Aspen is a good choice. It is less dense than many other hardwoods such as Oak or Elm, making it colonize faster but also getting "eaten" faster.

Don´t take my word for it, just a noob here, but I´d say go for it!

Thanks for the replies. I did find a few things on Aspen shortly after posting this. The sawdust question still remains. Is there a reason why you would want larger bits of wood? I think that sawdust would retain higher moisture content and hopefully be easier for mycelium to colonize.

One problem with sawdust is when it's too fine and packs too tightly. Then mycelium has a hard time works through the substrate.

Nope, no reason.
Just that I have lots of aspen standings in my farm, that need to be thinned out. Gives me lots of useful logs and I can chop the branches to wood chips.
I dont get that much sawdust, thats why I´m not basing the operation on that.
You are probably correct that sawdust colonizes faster.

Some teks suggest that you mix sawdust and wood chips to combine fast colonization and long production life (more flushes), also the chips makes it less dense I believe.
I´m not sure how it will work with only sawdust, it might be hard to get the right moisture content.
But I´m no expert, wait for a few more comment before starting to chase wood chips.
It might be good to mix in vermiculite if you go with only sawdust?

Edit: and you already got another comment while I was writing this... I´m to slow...
