"Carnivorous" fungi!
    #22441206 - 10/27/15 05:43 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Just wanted to let you guys know about some of the coolest fungi out there.

Nematophagous fungi : They have little noose-like structures along their hyphae, and when a nematode (a teeny tiny type of "worm") pokes it's "head" through, the noose contracts and the nematode is digested.

There is a similar one, a so-called Mycorrhizal fungus (associates with plant roots), is even more impressive. Using the same technique (nooses which constrict on touch), it harvests a tiny insect called a springtail. Plants which have these fungi on the roots can sometimes get as much as a full third of their nitrogen (sometimes apparently up to two thirds, but easily 1/3) from the dead springtails the fungus catches. In exchange for the nitrogen the fungus passes along, it receives sugars (fixed carbon) from the plant, and both of them live happily ever after.

First Cyan (indeed first wild Psilocybe of any kind) that I ever did find! Oddly enough, she was alone, in a fairly dark coloured mix of compost and soil, where as every other cluster since was in light/alder type chips!
