Teeny Tiny Plates
    #22440486 - 10/27/15 02:24 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I'm starting this to keep track of my progress and get some answers along the way.

I got a bunch of 50mm petri plates for free, they are very small and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with little plates? I figured they would be good for isolation because you don't need much growth and they save on materials.

So today I poured 10 of them and the big problem is that they almost seal when they close, making it very hard to open which I imagine is going to cause problems come isolation time, do you guys think the fact that they close means there won't be enough GE after I parafilm them?

Update with pics of my current progress. Each one is a clone of a different mushroom from the same grow taken at the same time.

Was a little bit sloppy with this one, got some random growth, still needs work

This one is better, I tend to have trouble getting the wedge off the blade and onto the plate cleanly. I think it will be good in a transfer or two.

This has been my best one throughout, first to be clean and closest to being an isolate I believe. I'm going to transfer a wedge and cut the rest out and put it to grains.

My favorite is 70mm. But i also use 50mm and even 30mm for isolating.
I never had a problem opening them. How much agar are you pouring in them?

yea take a picture, I've never had a hard time opening any size dish ever. but 50mm is just fine. I vastly prefer the 100x15 dishes though.

It's before I even open them, right out of the bag. I have to twist the top and bottom opposite directions really hard and then it feels like a suction cup pulling off I guess. Took some pictures but don't have a way to upload them yet, have a cord around here somewhere. I'll post when I find it. I only fill them up a little bit though, enough to cover the bottom. Accidentally overfilled one unfortunately, agar got onto the lid I assume it's trash?

I didn't get them from a website they were leftover from a lab that somebody gave me, I did a search on the brand, Falcon by Corning and found some that say tight fitting lid so I can only assume that's what I ended up with. Says they minimize dehydration, I guess all I can do is wait and see. Gonna do some xfers tomorrow so I'll post some real pictures.

doodoodoo nothing bad ever happened here. Any chance you could link that page you were referring to? I'm having trouble finding it on my own unfortunately...

He didn't just post garbage to up his count. Getting closer to fifty posts was ancillary to the main point of the OP. There's a big difference.

I wasn't accusing him of anything, seems like a good warning to be aware of though.

Tight fitting sounds good to me.

Did some more transfers today and have some questions.

First off, these little plates are totally sweet, had no trouble handling them or anything, had some troubles pouring simply because I wasn't used to them, overfilled two of them. Made ten of them, could easily do the whole tray in one sitting, or two if you were ambitious, it was nice to just have some extra plates lying around, I usually only made as many as needed.

I am trying to grow out C, because at one point it was pretty close to isolated(or so I thought) so what I've been doing is transferring a chunk, and then throwing the rest of the growth into a jar. I didn't do it for this one because upon removing the chunk it flew through the air and landed on the lid of the plate, I figured it was screwed so I just put it back, as you'll see.

They're tight fitting but once you get the hang of them it's really nice to not have to worry about them opening up, I feel like I could throw them around my room after I've wrapped them.

My opinion on the small plates: Totally excellent. I used half my usual recipe to made twice as many plates, and I overfilled them, a couple all the way to the brim ha. I'll get it next pour.

I did this transfer 4 days after I put the wedge in, how long do you guys wait?
