Should PDA be clear-ish?

I poured 10 plates of potato drxtrose agar with instant potatoes last week. They turned out fine and myc is growing great on it. My problem is, I think I did something wrong because the medium itself is not really transparent. When I took the jar out of the pc, there was sediment on the bottom from the flakes I assume. It's making it hard to see different sectors on my plates.
Are you supposed to strain the potato flakes out, or crush them up before making it?

they should have dissolved...
will still probably work though.
Double check your ratio of water to flake to agar and then make sure you stir real good next time.

What ratios did you use? I mix 3.3 grams potato flakes, 2.5 grams agar powder, a half cup of water, and 1.6 grams of dextrose (I use organic honey). The recipe is straight from Pasty's easy agar tek. Here's the vid by Munchauzen:

no ur good dude. u don't need to filter any agar recipe unless u want to. i think its better not to, makes it easier to see growth on top anyway. after PCing and before pouring, u do want to try and swirl ir around. sediment is ok, but u want to try and have each plate get same amount, instead of ur last couple plates getting it. make nutrients even across plates.
thick recipe

thin recipe

Same with mine, I make sure I mix it up really well on medium heat. Then after about a minute or so of mixing, I pour into my plates, cover, and PC. I follow the agar prep video I posted above to a T. Works every time.

For a liter of water, 20g potato flakes, 10 dextrose, 15g agar. You can divide by 4 b/c I only made 250 ml. That's right off s thermo scientific site.
Worked out good, but still opaque. Not as easy to see through as nutrient agar.

Or just buy the stuff...

... or the plates themselves, already poured, sitting out so you know they're sterile:

As for colour, media can darken if heated excessively. This is not a good thing.
Your problem very well may be from using rough potatoes, though.
First time I've heard of anyone doing that :o
