Sticky Ass Lids and Bands After PCing
    #22437829 - 10/26/15 09:28 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I know we all deal with it.  You PC a jar and the mother frigging band doen't wants to not budge at all.  I have gripped down with all the strength I can muster and still nothing.  Yes, eventually I get the band off but it is a friggin struggle.  So my thought is this....

What if I were to lube the outside edge of the mason jar and the inside of the lid band with an ever so light coating of vaseline?  Do you think doing that would create some strange vector for contamination?  I wouldn't think so, but I would love to hear from some of you.  If possible I would really like to hear the thoughts of a Trusted Cultivator or two if at all possible too.

Try plastic lids. They have not stuck for me yet.

:whathesaid: They're also a lot easier to work with in the SAB

You're gonna lube it up?

Just flip the lids upside down so the sticky part doesn't seal it. If I do use metal lids, that's what I do. Works perfect for me

I'll definitely have to try plastic lids some time. I just love metal lids too much lol

Man...them plastic lids are loose as a $2 hooker when they are hot...I used one to cook my agar last night...when I grabbed it by the lid I gave it a little swirl/shake and that shit was everywhere...then once they cool they sometimes get rediculously stuck on there...I had to kinda jab the edge with a screwdriver and tap it with a hammer to break it loose... I think I'm done with plastic lids....at least if a metal one gets stuck you can pop the top off with an old bottle opener/can opener thing.

I don't even screw them on tight in the PC or in the sab. Just to the point when there's resistance. It makes life soo easy

Plastic all the way. One piece construction. Melt a hole in the top and stick ez felt or filter material to the molten hole. Never freeze on the jar and working in the glovebox is cake.

Same.  I don't torque them much befor the PC run either.  Then I just give them as solid twist as they come out of the PC.  Then loosen them to the point of free spinning rings before putting them into the SAB.  Way more likely to get a contam whacking the side of your box with an elbow or fucking with the jar ring while holding an agar wedge in one hand than you are by having a loose ring for a minute before the SAB lid goes on.

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

Interesting, I've always assumed I had to use silicone to properly attach my piece of SFD to the top. What do you use to melt the holes? I've seen people using soldering irons a lot. Might need to pick one up soon.

I just score the plastic with a blade and use silicone anyway.  Don't wanna accidentally warp the lid.  But yeah just gotta not tighten it while hot.  I turn them just enough to not fall off when I move them.  One piece lids are nice for sure, makes G2G and shit way easier, not having to fuck with the rings or get your fingernails under the rim of the lid to pry it up, I guess removing the rubber like Mad said would fix that..

I use a propane blowtorch 3/8 extension then reduced to a 1/4 extension with a 1/4 socket on the end. Here is a thread when i first started doing it, ive since been using extra thick ezfelt for close to 20 cycles. Wear gloves so you don't melt molten plastic to your fingers and work outside or wear a respirator.

A big thannk you to everyone for all the replies.  As far as the lid thing goes,  I generally do flip the lids.  I really like the trick you pointed out Mad.  I am always afraid that flipping the lid might just not seal the lid to the jar all the way.  Obviously if this happens then it would be a perfect way for a contamination to sneak into the jar.

What I was really trying to address was the metal band refusing to loosen so I can remove the lid.  I am pretty sure that over and over use causes the bands to bend and warp just enough to seize it up on the jar and make it a real PITA to remove.  I think you guys might be right.  The long term solution might be to invest in some plastic lids.  For now I do not have the money to throw in on plastic lids though.  After posting this last night I started thinking more about using Vaseline to lube the bands.  My thought was that I do not think the Vaseline would make it through the PC run anyways.

I love the thoughts on this thread so far.  There has to be a way to get those bands to spin with ease right?  So some of you just tighten the band down enough to hold the lid in place?  Sounds good but I would be afraid that if it is too loose then you might let contams slip in through an imperfect seal.  Does keeping the band semi loose work without contams?  I have hesitated on doing this because I am afraid that if the band is too loose when you take the weight off the PC and all that air sucks in, then you are bound to let dirty air into the mix.  Plus if the seal is bad wouldn't there be an opportunity for dirty air to creep in when the Co2 builds up and finds a way out while pulling "FRESH" contaminated air in?  Is it that simple?  Does that work?  Dwamn! I am glad this site is here.  Simple questions simple answers....

Since we are talking of lubing stuff up... TRUE STORY:  One time a long long time ago  my wife and I were rolling.  We were kinda horny(go figure).  I wanted fuck her in the ass.  She was like all, "uh oh uhm... only because I'm rolling, but we don't have any lube."

I stopped that shit right in it's place.  "Nah baby I love you.  Besides we have Vicks Vapor Rub we can use."

She said okay and I lubed up with vapor rub.  I ramned that shit in and at first she was like, "Oh god yes! FUCK ME FUCK ME!"

But soon the vicks did it's thang.  She started to feel the BURN!  Anyways we finished and she told me never again would she do something so stupid as to use Vicks as lube.

"Ok" I said.  "Never again.  I understand."

Again this is a true story!:  The next time we rolled she asked for it up her ass.  I told her, "Uhmm... we don't have lube."

After taking a big ol' hit of the vapor rub she said, "Yes we do."

Next thing you know she grabbed a big ol' handful of the Vicks, rubbed it on my dick and said, "Stick it in."

Afterwards she said, "Didn't we try this before?  Didn't I say never again?"

lol

It can vary depending on what I am doing and how much stuff I need to PC in a particular day.  If I have a bunch of stuff to PC and it is going to be an all day event then at the very least I will wait until the pressure gauge has returned zero.  If I am only doing one PC run I will PC before I go to bed and then I will wait until the next day to open it.
