What to do after first grow?
#22437321 - 10/26/15 07:20 PM (8 years, 3 months ago) |

I'm looking for suggestions on what to do after my first grow?
I've just birthed 5 cakes and more on the way. Things are looking good. Used PF Tek.
For my second grow, what direction should I take?
Should I repeat the PF tek for my second grow as I know it well and have the equipment? Should I go a different route?
I'm looking to speed up the process or produce bigger yield, or both.

I'd repeat Pf tek one more time but switch up brf with other flours..

If your looking to speed up things your are going to want get a pressure cooker and start working with grains and live culture. Grains spawned to bulk is what you want to do for bigger yields and agar is the key to clean culture work allowing you to work with grains with confidence. It also eventually opens the door to liquids and is a key part of the process for most veteran grower.

Thx for the replies. I think I'll do Arush suggested and do one more round of PF Tek. It will be nice to learn my mistakes and have a better go this time around. In the meantime, I will do copius amounts of research on bulk.

Does it count as your first grow if you never stop? Hahaha.
Getting into agar is very rewarding. Isolations, cloning... Did you make any prints of your first fruits? I don't know how far you want to get into cultivation, but honestly I don't think it would be a mistake to go anywhere that interests you.
I haven't yet tried PF Tek, but may one day just for the experience. It's hard to not fall down the rabbit hole and find yourself wanting to try everything.

To answer the thread title question.. Your second grow.
Whew, I thought I had missed my chance.
Also, PF tek is... uh... well... I won't laugh at you while you're doing it, but once you're done and moved on, I'll be like "haha remember when you were doing PF tek?" and we'll all have a good hearty laugh about it.

have a look into clone LC via biopsy? use those clones on PF again, if they are clean you can test potency, pick a winner to move onto greater things?

Well my exact response to the title of this thread was...."Well, your second grow, duh."
And I only feel like maybe I should try PF Tek just once... I know a day will come when I will want to comment on someones cakes, but won't be able to without being a total ass hat.

Go monotub of course! You'll come to find this hobby to be quite addictive, i haven't even finished my first pf tek and I'm already dabbling with spawn bags. I plan to start playing with agar in the near future as well. Just do whatever you feel like doing, this hobby has so many possibilities!

That's a good way to do it. Get the cakes underway, and since 2-4 weeks of that is just waiting, get some grains going in the meantime.
And yeah I have limited experience with cakes. My first post here was a grow log for a mono. They're good to make once or twice just to mess with them. If you're any good at bulk, you can usually get them to fruit pretty well just by putting them in a mono or fruiting them out of the jar.
I'm only just qualified enough to know how to advise people on it. Who hasn't heard the specs for a SGFC a million times in a month here?
Holy crap Sturgill, are you letting folding@home eat up your whole CPU or using multiple clients or what? That's a really high score for such a low number of work units.

If you're looking for a small upgrade without spending much money, cakes spawned to coir in a 15-20qt monotub would probably be a nice increase in yield and decrease in maintainence.
Also, get some silicon and make injection ports so you don't have to bother with the verm barrier. Remember, you still need a poly or tvek filtered hole to allow for pressurization/depressurization/gas exchange.
--------------------
I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...

Uh. I'm sorry but that didn't happen.
That doesn't happen. I have the same one. 8 hours minimum. Usually 14-16 to cracker dry. 100% sure you know what cracker dry is like? You should try to bend it and it should crumble and you should go "fuck! I didn't mean to do that.."

Bwahaha i love my sig.
I have a pretty decent gpu (gtx980sc) I've just been running it at medium 24/7. I actually turned off the cpu folding bc it was bogging down my system at times. I use my tv as my monitor as well.

I keep mine at 160 too. I doubt you managed to fuck up but there's just... no way they could dry that fast unless I got a broken unit, but everybody elses times match up with mine for the most part.
And yeah you should try to bend them in a few different spots. The last spot to dry is usually either the thick solid base of the stipe, or the very top of the stipe, where it meets with the cap. That little area under there likes to stay moist til the very end.
You might let them sit out for an hour or so after you think they're cracker dry and see how the moisture redistributes. It can be dry as fuck on the outside and 20 minutes later it can be a sad limp dick.
Sorry to threadjack again op, this info is still good for you too though.

I'll just let them go another 5 hours. I trust your advice and doubt it's broken.
I just ordered a bunch of 5g silica packs on Amazon too. That's another thing you can do OP. Get an Amaon account. I swear having packages show up on your doorstep in like having a birthday every day of the year. 50 5g silica packs for $12 seemed worth it to me, except when you consider its just silica.

Sounds like a horrible idea. There is a reason why they are called brown rice flour cakes, versus just flour cakes. Other flour barely works
-------------------- Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I have not had great experience with rye flour. It seems to contain a good amount of bacterial endospores, and it's glutenous, which makes it texturally inferior IMO, and more prone to becoming useless goo if you overhydrate it even a little bit.
WBS flour sounds kind of intriguing. Not worth shitting on a coffee grinder to get it IMO.
