Are my shroom good to eat?
    #22437126 - 10/26/15 06:30 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hi there, I am a noob and just harvest my first batch. I harvest them since I think they are not growing significantly and no new shrooms coming out. (I am not sure what's the best timing) I am using a growing kit purchased online. I think this kit is somehow different than what I see from other people's since its instruction just tell me to fill water into the chamber over the "hydrotons"(the way the vendor calls it), which plays as the soil.

However, my shroom have some "black hair" on them. I remembered two or three days before I cropped them the hair is white. Are they still good to eat?

Also, some "hydrotons" are covered with this black stuff as well. Shall I throw away all of them in order to have a better next batch?

:whathesaid:
Looks like spores, make sure to pick your fruits before the veils pop wide open next time and you'll avoid the black mess. The air currents in your FC carry the spores all over the place.

Thanks!! Do you have any idea what the black hairy stuff is?
Also, I just tried to wash the black stuff away, but found that my shrooms are super fragile. I mean when I wash them, its just so easy to break them. The stems seem a little bit loose/hollow in the middle.

What air currents? That set up is perfect for a frog or something...maybe a salamander, but not mushrooms...they are so fragile and mushy because they are Hella waterlogged.

That's good to hear. Yeah I did notice that like two days ago they have a ridiculous growing speed and then they just "halt" growing then it began to turn into black.

Also, should I keep the airflow farther away from the cakes?

I think psilobob is talking about that air pump thing.

So Im gonna remove some water from it.. The instruction of the kit told me to add this much water tho.. I was hesitating that's a little bit too much as well. Sigh.. do you think this batch can really be potent enough?

Those bydrotons, do they act like sponge and absorb water?  If yes, drain all sitting water.

I would drain all sitting water.  Then, fan and spray/mist your fruiting chamber twice a day, as can.

That black be spores, yes.  For future use, alot of spores fallen onto cake surface can suffocate growth below.  Also, when mushroom begins opening veil, the potency doesn't increase with the size of mushroom.  Unless making spore prints, it is find to pick before veil completely breaks.

And so it begins...

Do ask all questions that arise to you and your ventures.

Well you colonized your cakes successfully, and you got some fruits so that's good

But next time you should dunk overnight and roll in vermiculite. Fruit in a SGFC. Lose that thing you have them sitting in

Who comes up with these kit designs? Goes to show how resilient cubes are. OP, use the search function and do a lot of research on this site, the advanced search function is awesome. Search for results in the past three or four years, the more current the better. This is a relatively new hobby so there is a lot of outdated info.

Also www.mushroomvideos.com, those videos are a wealth of information.
If you want something done right,DIY.
Don't throw that out, buy some turtles, turtles are cool.

All jokes aside, congratulations on producing fruits from that monstrosity and welcome to the Shroomery :super: Keep at it man, do lots of reading and have patience.

Those fruits are soaked. I hope you threw them in a food dehydrator or something faster than a desiccant chamber. If you are using desiccants those are going to begin to rot and stink before they dry.
