God muda thats actually cheap. Here RGS is around $15 for 5 lbs. Thats for cheap uncoated plain jane RGS. I can get oats from a farmer for $5 a bushel. I get animal feed grade wheat for nearly free. Not even the cost of gas tho I do have to trade some dried ganoderma for it.

WOW!  I didn't realize RGS was that expensive as it's pretty cheap and easy to get here.

I like RGS but it's way to expensive for me to use for anything but novelty. The cheapest RGS I've ever found was almost 6 times the price of oats.  I'm not sure why your yeilds were so low with bottles. I'm pretty disappointed if I pull anything less than 20 dry grams from the first flush.

I think it's probably because I don't fill the bottles as full as you probably do ... about half full at most ...

What do you pay for Oats?  I should check them out but RGS is $23 for 50 lbs here and it has the added benefit of being good for seeding my lawn when needed ...

Speaking of not filling the bottles all the way, I shoot for 75% or maybe 80% full.  I find that anything over that and the shaking/distributing of the innoculant becomes exponentially more difficult.  From the pics in the OP Muda is filling to 85-90% full.
I spend about 20-30 seconds on each bottle to make sure distribution is good (prob overkill).

Muda- how long do you shake each bottle for?  I find that if I fill to 90% the sub just kind of stays together as one unit for the most part no matter what I do, but with 75% things are mixing in all directions nicely.  You seem to have good distribution in your OP pics, I must be missing something?

It's been a while since I tried 90% but the time to shake would probably be in the 2-5 minute range for a really good distribution.

Here in Canada we routinely get raped on the cost of many things. The price to even ship something here often will cost more than the item being shipped.

When I lived in Kauai, had the same problem ... probably worse.  Everything super expensive.

With the small grows I do, I figure the 50 lb bag of RGS is about 200 bottles ... LOL!  That's going to last me a long time before I need to get some more grains.

That's a lot, like $100 for 50lbs gs.  I pay about $33 for 50lbs.
I get that grass seed can be way more expensive for many people. Much of what people find that is indeed grass seed is some expensive fancy variety like fescue. I avoid all that and just get plain bulk untreated rye grass seed.
Even at $2/lb I would still use grass seed for culturing and for master grain-to-grain jars.  It's so much more effective that the price belies the value for such a use.

I don't like RGS that much. At the end of the day grain choice makes little difference in over all yeilds. I actually get better yeilds from oats since they hold more water.

I don't fill  my bottles nearly that full anymore. 70% is what I generally shoot for. It's much easier to shake with less substrate leading to much faster colonisation times. I can have fully colonised bottles in 5 days with a fast culture as long as the bottles aren't over filled. Yeilds are still about the same but I imagine they wouldn't flush as many times. I don't go past 2 maybe 3 flushes anyway though. OP needs a few updates. There are a few things in the OP I never do anymore.

Saw pennington's RGS at home depot, 40$ for 40 or 50lbs.  Not sure if it's coated though.  Tripro off amazon (uncoated) was like 25$ for $25 lbs, though I think the price went up.

It's kind of a cool grain for special applications, though it seems to go bacterial very easily.  Rice and bird seed are pretty great.  Can't find any oats round here, and have little incentive to try.

I'm trying some mostly straw bottles with like, 10% coir and 25% RGS.  More targetted for oysters and pans.  I thought RGS would work well in low spawn ratios since it covers more area, and perhaps be more favorable for oyster/pan metabolism.

--------------------

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

Just a lot of little things mostly. Honestly I can't remember what's in the OP. A couple things I've changed are: I no longer use ships. Pp5 screw tops should be left unmodified like Violet dose in her tek. I pretty much ruined like 100 lids by adding SHIPs. I'm working with wide mouth pints now. I can fit mord substrate in my PCs using them, they are easier to work with and they should provide better BE than quart containers. Once I harvest My first set of pint bottles I'll work them into the OP somehow as an alternative option. I'll also tweak a few other small things at that time. I also have plans for a different FC as suggested by Violet earlier in this thread.

I found 16 qt screw tops that I didn't throw out with the others. So I'm making a batch using oats, bran, straw and coffee. I think it should work pretty well. Moste of them will be inoculated with ESS but I'm making one of them in a short screw top for pan trops.

Noice. I had some leftover CVG and an extra quart of PE spawn so I mixed them together and tossed 'em on my shelf. This culture doesn't fruit well in bottles, but whatever, better than tossing either of them out.

Yeah I always try to find something to do with my extra substrate.

I wound up having enough from this batch to do 14 qts, 2 pints and this little.

Haha, badass. When I first did your original Tek I had a tiny bit leftover and used Pasty plates for bottles. I got fruits from them too, it was funny.

I guess that kinda blows the "you can't get a big mushroom from a tiny amount of substrate" belief out of the water.

That myth was debunked a long time ago. I think it was RR that grew some pretty decent looking fruits off of like a half inch of BRF paste in a jar. All they need is water and nutrition. As long as you can provide those two things sub size don't matter.

It's pretty amazing watching how quickly water (using bottom watering) is sucked up into growing fruits when growing in jars where you can observe it.  I'm going to try bottom watering with sterilized grain water at some point to see if it has any impact at all.

It will grow mold pretty quickly. Using sterilised grain water on your sub  would be like leaving a fresh LC siting in the open with the lid off.
