Laughing at your thoughts

Any experienced meditators find that with increased detachment from ones cognitive process (i.e. the constant inner dialogue) that the absurdity of the thoughts that often occur becomes quite comical?
Feel like there's a comedy show going on in my head at times.

I don't meditate much, but I laugh at myself all the time. Some of the shit my brain comes up with is ridiculous. So I laugh. It seems to me that not taking oneself all that seriously is a major virtue.

Do you feel you have a good ability to remain detached from your thoughts DQ? I don't see this in many people I meet. People seem so attached to what their thoughts on their selves and their world currently are.
I can empathise. I was once too.

Tangential joke:
Walking into the empty sanctuary of his synagogue, a rabbi was suddenly possessed by a wave of mystical rapture, and threw himself onto the ground before the Ark proclaiming, "Lord, I'm Nothing!"
Seeing the rabbi in such a state, the cantor felt profoundly moved by similar emotions. He too, threw himself down in front of the Ark, proclaiming, "Lord, I'm Nothing!"
Then, way in the back of the synagogue, the janitor threw himself to the ground, and he too shouted, "Lord, "I'm Nothing." Whereupon, the rabbi turned to the cantor and whispered, "Look who thinks he's Nothing!"

Definitely man, every neurotic, inauthentic thought becomes quite amusing when you witness it from a bird's eye view. There's nothing you can do but forgive yourself and find some humor it. I've known this since I was 18 and had myself convinced that I was dying on acid, the absurdity of it became quite clear with a hug from a friend and a quick shift of perception and feeling more alive and vibrant than ever.
-------------------- Everything is better than it was the last time. I'm good. If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence. I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Do you mean that you first experienced this whilst intoxicated?
I had my first experience of this recently after smoking some weed. I got a touch of paranoia (haven't had that from weed in decades, however it used to get me pretty badly at times) and viewing the thoughts from that 'bird's eye view' it was highly amusing just how absurd they can be.
Love your description though; 'neurotic, inauthentic' - hell yeah man, they are certainly that!! Amazing the sheer volume of them when you can watch!

Yah, I was very high on acid and thought I was having a heat stroke at a concert in the hot summer, not really eating or drinking enough... The thoughts I was having were ludicrous, but that bird's eye view came during a hug from a friend, it extricated me from the drama, I could witness my thoughts and laugh at the cosmic schmuck I am.

Well I guess I am not that attached to my thoughts, although I am very interested in pursuing the truth. So my ideas are important to me, but no, I do not think my thoughts govern me all that much.

Yep definitely get this. The more you can observe, the more absurd the thoughts become. It often seems like a little child throwing a tantrum.

I'd say that's an excellent analogy, PocketLady.

I just recently took some notes on my meditation practice, the contents of which relate very much to what you are saying. Meditation gives me the time and space to simply observe my mind in its natural habitat, chattering away, mixing and churning all of the experiences it has stored away into dozens upon dozens of original flavors. Mmmmm.
As you say, many people are very attached to their (involuntary) thoughts, to the point at which they believe that those thoughts are actually them! That the chatter in my mind does not originate from the "actual me" is one of the most important realizations I've had to date.
Have you ever seen Revolver (2005)? This movie really gets at that voice in your head.

I'm as detached from my thoughts as I need. Not enough to ruin emotions or sensory experiences but a decent amount from my thoughts. Had it since before any drugs but after a bad life experience. I guess it's a blessing and a curse because it's hard for me to accept even good thoughts as authentic.

You guys are cool. And yes, people not taking themselves too seriously is a MAJOR virtue in my opinion.
But remember, this realization doesn't liberate you from the fact that our thoughts (even our new, detached, byrd's eye view ones) are still biological oprocesses and they're probably never coming out as 'neutral' as we'd like to imagine.

Yes, for sure -- I think there is always going to be bias. Especially when someone is evaluating something about himself. There's bias there at all times, imo no matter what, colored by many different processes -- culture, language, genetics, memory, etc.
