melatonin as a calmative?
    #2235478 -

I don't have any benzos to administer to someone who is having a bad trip, but I do have plenty of 3mg melatonin pills. Would they help calm someone down? Maybe if they took enough they could go to sleep even if they were still tripping?

Near the end of one of my shroom trips, my friend and I just wanted to go to sleep so we each took 3mg melatonin. It didn't help us fall asleep, but it did mellow us out.

If you are not a M.D. then do not p be ginving people pills which you haver no business giving.

The talk down method is the best and then if that still does not woork, doctors sometimes give a 5 mg or 10 mg valium.

many folks like to keep some vitamin B3 (as niacinamide or inositol hexanicotinate, to avoid "flushing" effect) on hand; it often seems to help mellow things out...
(WiccanSeeker has some posts here at the shroomery about B3; & gnrm23 may have posted some links to info about dr abram hoffer & his "orthomolecular psychiatry" approach...)
~
as to melatonin, well... a few milligrams can make you ready to sleep, but - look at the structural formula - it is a tryptamine, & some folks report "wild dreams" &c from larger amounts... ymmv...

I've used melatonin to help myself get over sleepless comedowns. It does seem to calm the constant thoughts racing through your mind and cut back any excess body energy.

Melatonin has been useful in these situations (I've seen it used to cut the edge off the end of meth experiences, acid experiences, etc.) - but it's not a guarantee. Most psychedelic experiences that are too intense can be dealt with using set/setting and conversation.

hmm, thats cool. ill be sure to get some melatonin for my next trip.

and i dont see anything wrong with giving it to your friends. whats the difference between giving your friends mushrooms and melatonin? tell them they can do research beforehand if they want, if they feel comfortable doing it. i think it's great that your thinking ahead, and about other people. props to you :-)

of course I would try to talk them down first, but if that didn't work then I was just wondering if melatonin would help.

thanks for the info gnrm23, I'll keep that in mind

Yeah, heaven forbid someone on the shroomery boards be involved with giving a friend pills not prescribed by an MD :-P

i also think melatonin may actually give the trip a euphoric and more powerful edge. a good idea, try it yourself first.

I would, but melatonin makes me fall asleep too easily. Perhaps a very small dose.

But tripping keeps you awake. So melatonin would smooth things out. A more mellow trip. Instead of speeding twirling trip.

Valour, you could get ten years for giving an aspirin to a child while you would most likelly get probation for shrooms.

I found it hard to fall asleep without weed, so I took melatonin sometimes. My aunt said that melatonin can cause sterility in men.

Someone else told me that marijuana increases your melatonin by something like 4000%, hence the weed naps. Someone else told me that marijuana causes sterility in men.

Is the sterility caused by the melatonin?

a parent giving aspirin to their child would not get 10 years. and they would certainly get more than probation for shrooms. anywho, shrooms are certainly safer than aspirin, going to show how ridiculous laws are. why should we base our morals on how laws operate? if melatonin is safe, and has no dangerous reactions with mushrooms, why should he not give it to his friend? im sure he wouldn't give it to his friend if he found out they would convulse and die. i think of that as pretty decent on his part.

and where is your source for 10 years for giving aspirin to a child?

So johnny, you're telling me, we should never give medicine of any sort to anyone without an MD's approval?

Wow, amazing. Really.

Melatonin production is stimulated by meditation. Obviously there are other mechanisims involved there, but the practiced there of certainly does mellow you out and it would be foolish to think that melatonin has nothing to do with that.
