questions on pinning
    #22436118 - 10/26/15 01:42 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I'm doing mono tub with coir and verm with a few quarts of wbs. I started pinning a few days ago and have prolly 30 or so that are prolly bout 1/2 tall with prolly hundreds starting. My question is if that is normal for them to be so far apart on growth. My worry is that If I'm supposed to harvest everything at once then that means at least to my knowledge that I'll have only a few at full growth and all kinds of them that are just starting or part way threw there growth. Is this fine or am I worrying bout nothin?

I wait till the veil breaks.

I don't let the caps open. Black spores all over your product doesn't look nice when dried.

I normally harvest every five hours by snipping them at the base.

so I don't have to harvest all at once? I thought that was best to avoid contams. And I no bout it letting caps open. So if I snip them at base what am I gaining rather than just picking them and what does that do for my next flush?

If you pull them it tears up the surface and will hinder your second flush..

If you harvest all at one time, you will end up with all different sizes.

You don't want to pick them before maturity..

:goodluck:

so basically pick as needed? right on I like that way better than a lot of the other stuff I've read. After finally doing one it doesn't make any sense to pick all at once.In my head I want the most I can get out of each one. does it matter on how close to snip them or just ass close as a can or what?

You can twist and pull, push the base of the mushroom down to harvest, or cut them. I practically never cut mine, and very rarely do huge chunks of substrate come with it

You can cut the cap of the mushroom off and take a spore print, or dry it also if you didn't want to harvest the full mushroom. Unless there's one or two boomers that'll drop spores everywhere, I always harvest all at once. As do most people. Not every single mushroom will be at its absolute peak when comes time to harvest, its not a big deal.

So is it normal than that mine seem so far apart or am I tripping on nothing. Like I said I got like 30 bout 1/2 inch tall and what looks like hundreds just starting to pin.  If I picked before the first veil breaks than I'm picking almost all that are way behind that first one?

I snip them as close to the surface as possible, but I don't want to damage any pins or smaller shrooms.

I also make a pouch out of nylon window screen and fasten it to the front of a fan. The pouch is my first stage of dehydrating the shrooms..
This will shorten the time that your product will be in the desiccant chamber or dehydrator.

Just wait till they get more mature man. Them smaller ones could double or triple in size in 24-48 hours. If it looks like some are about to drop spores then harvest them.

:lolwut:
Sticking them in the dehydrator right away will dry them much quicker than doing a "pre" dry with a fan
You want to dry them quick as possible.

another question I have is I've read that after picking I should fill in those spots with more coir and verm is that only if you cased it or do I do that even if I didn't case?

Don't add coir after picking. A heavy mist is good if you really tore up the substrate.

Or if you picked your whole first flush, you can dunk your substrate for ~2 hours to rehydrate it for your second flush.

I've never heard that myself, but yeah, some people probably do do that.
That'll just slow it down because it has to colonize all of that. If I happen to rip up a bit of substrate during harvest then no big deal. I just mist it and get it ready for the 2nd flush:shrug:
I don't even go for a 2nd flush that often anyways. You can always flip the sub too if you want.

I don't like running my 600 watt dehydrator for small amounts.
By dehydrating them with a fan until I have enough to load up the dehydrator works good for me..

Flip the sub? Sorry if I sound like amature hour but I am lol. And I don't have a dehydrator so I guess I'll be just putting a fan on them.

You can dry them in the oven on the lowest setting with the door open and a fan in there. And yes, flipping the sub. If you wanted to literally flip the sub and go for a 2nd or 3rd flush by doing that, you could. Just be gentle you don't want to crack the sub when you flip it.

From what I understood is that heat will lose a lot of potency is that correct? And is there any harm in just putting fan on them?

Thermal degradation takes very high temperature. Like I said over 300/350

Enzymatic degradation because fruits are still wet takes place at room temp to warm temps. Over 150-160f most enzymes are cometely deactivated.

Us guys who have been around do as hot as the dehydrator goes. To shut off enzymes. And get them cracker dry as fast as possible to lock in potency.

Usually 12+ hrs or more for thick fucks

Dehydrator FTW, crank it up and rip the knob off.

You need a dehydrator - get one

I would recommend a dehydrator to anyone, even if you just do a couple cake grows a year. Last time I was in Walmart they had a presto dehydro for 30 some bucks. When you are not drying mushrooms you can make some jerky and fruit snacks, they are very handy.

You want your product cracker dry. It'll break in two like a cracker..

Suggestion. Get a plastic shoebox.

Fill it half full of damp-rid or it could be called Dry Home..( gallon plastic jug at Costco in the cleaning isle.. It's cheap)

Lay a nylon window screen on top of the damp-rid in the shoebox.

Layer of shrooms on top of the screen.

Put the lid on and slip it into a plastic bag and tie wrap the bag.
10 20 hours cracker dry...

The dryer the shrooms you put into the shoebox the longer your Damp-Rid will last.

Remember always keep the plastic bottle/shoebox sealed from the atmosphere. Moisture will deteriorate it in a short order..
