Problem - minature mushrooms
    #2243555 - 01/15/04 10:37 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I dug through the FAQs but couldn't find any information regarding this..

A friend is on his second small terrarium grow using PF Tek with verm casings, perlite humidification, and a humidifier for air exchange on a 15min/2hour timer.

His first grow was B+, and was fantastically successful. The second time, using Hawk's Eye Kamoi Super Strain (sp) under identical conditions is producing many shrooms as well, but the majority of them are TINY. They reach 3-4 inches, and in some cases the stems are so thin they can't support the cap and fall over. There are a few normal sized shrooms interspersed.

He would dismiss this as just a strain difference, but he left one cake on a plate with a glass on top as a control cake. This control cake produced "normal" shrooms with thick stems and big healthy caps.

One thing he can think of that may have caused the problem was too much air exchange. The setup has two rubbermaids. The casings colonized unevenly, so two were put in one rubbermaid for starters, with both humidifier hoses going into one rubbermaid. A week later, the second two casings were ready and placed in their rubbermaid, and the second humidifier hose was diverted to that tub.

Any other ideas on the tiny tiny shrooms? (They're awfully cute though!)

Please, feel free to chastise if I overlooked the answer in the FAQ.

Just strain + genetics + thin substrate + large pinset. It's a combination of all those factors.
