Iradiated Mail

I recently read an article about how since the anthrax mailings, more and more of the large distribution centers the Post office uses are starting to use machines that destroy harmful agents such as anthrax, ect that may be in the mail.It said they are still not widespread because the machines are very expensive, but they are suppose to be in widespread use by 2006.
My question is if this process kills anthrax spores,ect..will there be a day soon in the future when we wont be able to have mushroom spores shipped in the mail ?

I have done some reading on the subject online, and from what I have read the irradiation is with uv light wich could penetrate envelopes. now from the info that I have seen these uv light systems are being used in the congresses mail rooms and other government facilities which could be targets of terrorism. what I have read is that the cost for irradiating all mail in the usa would be prohibitive. I first became interested in this subject because of an article I read in the yahoo news section on a man who patented a mail box that will irradiate your mail with uv light. perhaps you could look at their news search to find out a bit more on the subject.

Well, I don't see anywhere in Publication 52 - Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail that you can't mail spores. Also, I'm sure UV radiation would damage some plants (you're allowed to send plants that don't fall under noxious weed laws) so they must have a stamping that exempts something from irradiation, but maybe they do it to all mail, in which case it would be impossible to send anything UV-sensitive.

I may be wrong....but i believe mail that has been sterilized is stamped "irradiated" or something..

I didnt mean that we would be prohibited from mailing spores,I meant that if in the future they begin irradiating all mail or even a large portion, would it kill the spores, therefor making it kind of pointless to send them through the mail.

I mean that if they don't state it isn't allowed, they could have a service/stamp for mailing live plants and other specimins, since UV could be harmful.
