this guy on craigslist posted for two free agave plants. They are large and in his backyard. He lives really close to me. I think he just wants to get them out his yard. I was thinking take the pina center of the agave and make spirits, then prehaps i can compost with the rest of the plant. Also, i hear you can get nectar and sweetener out of it. What you guys think? Would agave make good compost?

Ok here is the deal with agave.
I would suggest to go and do a little research on them for edible-use. Some varieties contain some compounds that are an Irritant. Some are best not ingested. Some varieties you can indeed macerate the pith and mucelage to make nectar. I am growing a couple varieties for this use.
Agave Salmiana https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave_salmiana
Agave horrida v. horrida http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/60612/
I like Agaves regardless of edibility. They are visually interesting to me. I just urge caution in ingesting them. Some species contain Irritants such as Oxolic acid. That react on the skin directly. In some species the irritants can be cooked out or fermented out, but I just urge caution. Not all Agaves are suited for culinary purposes. Not only that, but some people also are allergic to things and are sensative to compounds. I wish you good luck.
If you do decide to get them, take a photo for us. I would love to see them, and the variety that they are.

I would imagine as good as any other green material.

oh snap! so the agave may not be the blue agave thats desirable?! So if its indeed the other less desirable agave, then its no good for making tequila?

I said green material in the context that good compost is produced from a mix of green materials - green leaves, grass clippings, weeds, etc - and brown materials - bark, coffee grounds, dead leaves, etc. It could well be the blue agave - Agave tequilana

Mezcal is made from various types of agave. Tequila is a type of Mezcal that uses Blue agave. So it doesn't have to be Blue agave but like kizatzhaddarak said you'll want to make sure it's a type that is safe to use.

well, anyhow, you will probably see blue agave or variegated agave americana, as those are the most common. If you find something different you may want to keep it, despite the process of transport and putting into the ground may be difficult and dispendious ( for example, it's a beautiful A.Ferox!)
Another drink you can make by agaves is Pulque (Salmiana is expecially used for this) but the agaves must be almost flowering.
