Two fungi.
    #22434049 - 10/25/15 10:34 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hello everyone,

I got two separate fungi that I'd really love to identify.
-The poly pore is from two days ago it was growing on a branch, but apparently the branch fell off the tree due to strong winds or who knows. I believe it was growing on an Alder tree.(Sorry for the pics not so great)
  • Texture:Feels like Foam
Gills seem to be on top It seems.

-This next one I found today up in the mountains. They were growing on rotten wood I believe. 2-3inches tall.

Are you sure it was alder? Not birch? I have gotten some birch poly pore form Birch that looked a LOT like that mushroom. Did you cut into it? Was it easy (BPP is like cutting rubber a bir) to cut? What does it smell like like mushroom but sronger? BPP.. I found that birch poly pore in PA. Where about are you? If its birch poly pore. I suggest to cut it with an electric knife dry the pieces and make mushroom tea from it. DO NOT EAT ANY MUSHROOM YOU'RE NOT 100% SURE OF!

I agree with the others that your polypore looks like Piptoporus betulinus (Birch Polypore). The second is Xylaria hypoxylon.

thats cool, i didn't realized  Xylaria hypoxylon might be included in the 'medicinals', there was a flurry of research but it also seems to have stalled
