Calvatia gigantea. Edible, if it's all white inside when you slice it open.

Hey thanks asukawashere & The Lightning for the quik response!!
Calvatia booniana is the West Coast variety
I will let him know so he can do some research.
He is on the boarder on the New York side.
Thanks for the all white tip when going to eat one. When I researched it real quik it says when they go to make spores the color changes and it may not be too edible by then

Which side of the border isn't really relevant (it's not like mushrooms will hit a state line and say "nope, we don't grow here!" and turn around). I was questioning Lightning's I.D. of C. booniana, a species that typically occurs west of the continental divide, based on the NJ/NY location of this specimen.
And yes, when they start to discolor inside, they'll make you puke. Never experienced it myself, but I avoid such things on principle. :P

Why not in Jersey? Is Jersey too special for Calvatia booiana?

I've always read it was a western species… as in, why would it be all the way on the East coast?

Yeah that tends to be misleading for some species, maybe many species.

The best way to prepare these is to make eggplant Parmesan; substitute the puffball for the eggplant slices.
The key is to cook the puffball slices very crispy; slice them thin as you can.

Eat it now, man. Once it starts to turn it's too late. Basketball sized is enough, don't be greedy and miss out!
You know shrooms are prime when young.
