momental happiness is only possible through desire. no desire, no pleasure. the search is the goal. that's why Art is the most noble entreprise, it doesn't require much, and the only object of your desire is your next, upgraded, new, augmented creation.

The search for the newest gadget is only driven by dissatisfaction with our predicament. The predicament being: we are primitive creatures who should be doing simple things. And how hard it is to be simple. The next gadget or thing designed to give us happiness or ease always comes at a higher cost. The cost of freedom, of contentment. Time slips away, life goes by too fast. We still need to come to grips with who we are.
These things are all said much better by CG Jung...I basically wrote what I remember from his autobiography and posted here if anyone is interested.

RanOutOfWeed said: bullshit. Even the lower end garret 250 detectors can tell the difference between gold and trash
Believe me I used the 250 and ran gold in front of it to test it many times, always shows gold, not trash.
I'm not saying that gold doesn't usually get detected correctly. I'm saying that aluminum rings up the same as gold. Gold is an alloy, and many variables affect the conductivity. Aluminum has a similar conductivity reading, and the size can make it look very similar to gold. You also could have two buried metal pieces in close proximity that throws the readings way off.I have a AT Pro and a V3i triple frequency detector with a graphical display. The V3i makes it easier to discriminate, but it isn't perfect. Regardless of the tools, the best discrimination happens in your head. That is the beauty of metal detecting, and what hooked me. It takes skill to learn how to use the tools effectively. Some are better than others, but it isn't a 100% science. I find that in general, the more stable the readings are, the more likely it is a better indication to dig. I promise that if you are passing over the trash signals, you are passing over gold.
I will say that I am correct about silver 90% of the time, because it has a very unique reading.
That's really cool. My father got a metal detector for his b day and I used it once but only found like rocks and some coal. Is there a website I can go to to learn more about this. My dad has miles and miles of woods behind his house, and I guess there used to be an old farmhouse on his property 100 to 150 years ago and it would be neat to see what those people left behind. I'm sure 150 years ago they didn't have trash pickup and probably threw a bunch of shit in there back yard woods. I would love to learn more about finding things with a metal detector.
Btw I'm not sure of the model he got but it was a cabellas brand. More then likely their cheapest detector. Do you know if it it's decent or not?

that trike bike is badass.
I think u would be moe satisfied with the trike bike overall. Its a more complex toy and needs maintainence (like cleaning), so there is more to do with it i think.
Plus, u caan use your spare time to look for cool, windy roads in your area

Just pick up a garrett ace 250. I've had 2 of them and I love love LOVE that detector. Best u can get for 220 bucks.
You'll be hooked after you pull up a silver coin for the first time
I found a gigantic silver pocketwatch from the early 1900s near a graveyard, but again the area here is just ridiculous to try and dig. Rocks EVERYWHERE. It's horrible

so about those dopamine levels, any way to boost the baseline with non-pharma made chemicals, instead using the street corner vendor we can find in nature? it would be neat if such a thing was possible.

thetechnician said: That sounds like a promising site to detect! Back in the day, they just buried a lot of their trash.. I know my grandpa did! They also didn't trust banks, so they would often bury their savings.
It's pretty common to hit on rocks if they have iron in them. Most detectors have a "hot rock" setting to assist with discrimination. I can't remember the last time that I accidentally picked up a rock, but I guess it depends on your territory. When I first started, I was amazed by the rocks that I would find. Some had so much iron, a magnet would stick to them!
Any modern detector is better than no detector, or the old detectors that couldn't discriminate. I'm not familiar with the Cabela's model, but it can't be that bad. You could always get on the metal detecting forums and inquire within the community. The Ace 250 is considered to be one of the best "standard" entry level detectors in the $200 range. I know people who have some great finds with very cheap detectors. As long as it is functional, I would just get out there and see how you like it. If you find that you are still interested after a year, invest in a better model. This hobby has a high turnover rate.
The main difference that you see with the more expensive detectors:
Depth - the V3i can hit on things that are 12"-18" deep! I don't like to dig big holes though, so I mainly stick to 6" max.
Features like "recovery delay" - You can adjust how fast the detector "recovers" from hits and moves on to the next object. This is pretty useful for ground with a lot of metal. Some of the lower end models have a "fixed" recovery delay, and you generally want models with a better faster speed. (ATpro has an EXCELLENT RD!)
Better discrimination on some models. The high end models use multiple frequencies to analyze metal. Certain metals react more to certain frequencies. My detector creates a graph that makes it easy to visually see what is going on. You can even visually see the size of the object. Models without the graphical display depend on your ability to interpret the sounds vs the speed of your swing. You can get pretty effective with this, and it is one of the allures of metal detecting. You "become one" with your metal detector, and interpret the data on the fly.
Convenience features like wireless headphones, waterproof enclosures, rechargeable batteries, etc.
You can see that the major perks with the higher end models are just slight enhancements. You don't need to have a high end model to find good stuff! The real treasure with this hobby is the journey, not what you find in the ground!
Wow thanks for all the info! I'm excited to get out there and find some crap. I just figured it would be a waste of time but now I'm more optimistic about trying it out.

You already paid them, so now they'll continue to torture chickens for their eggs
They don't care what you do with them after they have your $. You should make a youtube video throwing them at the egg place tho. It'll make a lot of $
