how to tie and hang poly tubes
    #22432817 - 10/25/15 05:09 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

So i'm making the step up to poly tubes. I'll be using my impulse sealer to seal the bottoms but what are some of the better methods to seal the top? I was thinking zip tie then a slip knot under the zip tie to hang the bag by. I got some 60 lb test braided nylon rope to hang it by.

poly tubing for straw works great.
i ran into some issues the last time i did those.
if you weld the bottom of a straight poly tube (with no side gussets) you'll end up wit a bottom, that has "ears". those spots are real susceptible to conatmination, especially when your straw isn't chopped into tiny pieces.
i got metabolites accumulating in those "ears" in the growroom..
a 2mm weld is enough to hold the weight of a 1M long strawlog
i just zip-tied the tops, cut holes in the sides and let them colonise on the side- don't stack them ontop of each other though, as the temperature will rise a fair bit in the middle of the stack and the weight pushing down on the bottom logs will cause dents in them.
they're also going to stink a little during colonization- if you colonize indoors, it might attract some moddafugin' flies, man! i'm paranoid about those things, they lay eggs on the mycelium and worms might appear in the fruiting bodies. it'd be a good idea to put some sort of breathable cover on them during colonization.
i wouldn't recommend hanging the whole weight of the bag, try to supprot the weight from the bottoms as well. the substrate falls downwards inside the polytube during fruiting- that causes the stem to break off from the punctured hole... bad times.

my hung logs fruited great and i wanted to give them one more day before harvesting. the next day some of the bigger clusters had fallen to the floor.

if you ziptie the tops, try not to lift them too much from the top, as every time you do that, you suck air into the log, witch might cause contamination at the top.

best of luck, keep us posted.

Good pointer on lifting from the tops and the flies. I bet 5 gal paint strainers on each end would work well, its a real fine mesh.  Why not just colonize hanging? My available space for colonization it makes more sense for me to hang them. Sounds like it would also solve the compaction issue as once pinset occurs it should already be mostly settled.

I colonize my straw logs hanging in the grow room and they fruit when they are ready, usually around 21 days.
I just tie off the bottom, stuff it tight, tie off the top and use two zip ties to hang it from a metal "S" hook.
Never had a bag fall.

Back when I was growing oysters I would use metal clips that are designed to make cages with. I did mine in ice bags I would hold the top spin the bag to get a tight twist take the clip and the pliers designed to squeeze them.  Then use a s hook to hang them from a chain..

I think you are referring to hog ring and hog ring pliers.

Fox fire, that's pretty much what i'm thinking, only i might impulse seal the bottoms. What lb test zip ties did you use?

Honestly I would not recommend impulse sealing the bottoms, it's just not as strong.
Those ice bag clips (think big stapler) would work for smaller bags, but the big columns are too heavy.
I put one regular knot in the bottom and one in the top.
My straw logs run about 40 lbs. and I stuff them till I think they'll pop.
The two zip ties, (mine are 75 lb test) one goes around the top knot and has the second coming out of it to hook onto the "S" hook.
Most of the weight of the column is supported by the bottom rack, so the ties are mostly just to keep it in place.

No problems sealing 75# bags here.  I used the cheapest 4" zip ties from the dollar store usually on top.  If youre in it to win it, get a 5mm sealer.  Way better and will last years instead of a year.

Pricey but much better than what I found. I guess its cheap insurance for logs growing $100 worth of product.

Why seal? I tie a knot at the bottom and it uses at most 2" of tubing. At $200 for 1500' you're looking at saving $6 per roll if you make 5' bags; it would take you a long time to make back the price of the sealer.

I bookmarked this one, hanging of logs happens 3:20 - 4:00 .

Looks like a simple rope around the knot on poly bag.

Stupid youtube muted audio, if I remember correct audio was recorded and not added to video, shame on you youtube

yea sublime was playing in the background.. dumb. Well it seems they don't even use a knot! just a loop that hangs on the poly tube knot. KISS. Sucks because i just opened up $10 in SS hooks. I'm glad they didn't have more hooks lol, it was only 3x 2 packs. Thats a good method with the rope too because if you use a good knot your load capacity is double the rating for the rope since it doubled over.

good point moonlight, yea it would take me years to pay off. And i only plan to go through a roll every 6-8 months.

I bought a sealer on ebay 400mm for $39 Australian with free shipping from china and it's a great unit only works on impulse not heating all the time.It even came with a spare wire element and silicone strip.
I found sealing the bags on a 10 kg straw log works fine and a little piece of duct tape holds the 2 ears to the bottom.I gave up hanging my logs because of the gap that appears at the top during fruiting and the hole around the hook-great place for bugs.
just in case anyone's got a few bugs -I spray olive oil from a can onto the wall and ceiling around the lights and they stick to it like glue-wipe clean every few days if you need to and re-apply.
I am now using 40 denier pantyhose on my logs to keep the bugs from getting in during colonisation.
