Not for coir. Coir actually does better for me sterilized. Coir is next to impossible for molds to germinate on, and contains nearly no bacteria thermophyllic or otherwise. So proper pasteurization for it is totally unnecessary extra work.

Bucket tek is fine

Bucket still works for loose coir but, if I had loose coir as cheap as bricks I would just sterilize the shit. Specially with that big ass PC ya got there. IMO coir is best sterilized, bucket second, pasteurized third. Simply hydrated with no heat treatment is best saved for casing.

I'll try a tub sterilized. For casings you just make ut wet and go?  Hot or cold water.

Muda does. I like my coir casing a bit colonized so I heat treat at 130-140F for 60 min.

Wow it's just amazing how contam resistant coir really is! Sterilized, partially-sterilized, pasteurized, under-pasteurized in subs and casings! :themoreyouknow:

All you really have to worry about is having the cleanest spawn possible, the rest is history

Exactly, that's the beauty of coir for a beginner.(I no longer consider myself a beginner but I still use mostly coir exclusively due to ease of prep and acquirement.)

Properly pasteurizing is actually kind of tricky, it was for me to learn at least. Using coir removes this issue for a new grower.

For a noob, one less thing they can fuck up is always a good thing.

+1 for bucket tek

in the beginning, i was against it because i was working with dirty spawn.  i exclusively use the bucket tek with CVG now that my spawn is clean (except the minor bacteria issue i'm facing with my oats).

also, i'm retiring the use of pasteurized 50/50 casing in favor of hydrated coir

a simplified life FTW!

Where do you think the bacteria in your oat spawn is coming from?

And yeah, if you think about it, a less colonized casing layer let's the casing layer perform it's function better. Cubes have a hard time colonizing/digesting coir that hasn't been heat treated. I imagine the heat breaks the coir down.

I've found genetics plays a huge role in how much my casing layers will colonize. Some cultures won't touch it, others devour it.

probably from the oats themselves.  since now, i've been doing 2-2.5 hrs @ 14-15psi.  it's been fine enough for A2G but whenever I try LI, my jars either stall or take 2-3 weeks to colonize.  pasty was saying the A2G is probably fine because it's dry but with the added moisture of LI, it gives bacteria an edge.

so, im going to hydrate my oats a little bit less, increase my sterilization cycle to 60 min @ 20 psi, rest for no more than 18 hrs, then, finish with 120 min @ 20 psi.  (except i'm going to do that with 18 psi instead of 20 because i'm nervous about overclocking my pc that much)

can't wait to try it out.  i'm about to noc up some test jars later tonight.

Yes, LI/LC will give you bacteria if your grain is wet.
Also, and i know some people don't, but i soak my grains fir 18-24 hours. Some people get good enough grain that it's not necessary. Some aren't so lucky.

Oh man. I may catch heat for this as i have in the past, but soaking grains allows endospores (if they are present) to germinate which is necessary to kill them.
If there are no endospores, soaking is not necessary. But you can't tell by looking at it. And you may get 49 bags of grain that are fine and you never need to soak, but if your 50th bag has endospores and you didn't soak, you're fucked.
So as a precaution, i personally feel it's best to soak.

Wait isn't this done in RR's rye grain preparation video?

Would there be a negative effect for soaking them?

I've never seen rr's videos.
No negative effect except the first time you need to wait a day to do grain. But once you're on a schedule, you soak tomorrow's grain today and so on.
