Cubensis "straw log" and much more!

I just wanted to share some of the fruits of my labor for without this community I don't believe this would be possible. What we have here is the final stages of a cloning project that I started a little while back. On the top is a horse poo supplemented straw log. Honestly I had a lot of hpoo left over from spawning those 4 tubs and said "screw it, mix it up!" The poo was locally sourced, field aged poo and couldn't have been better. It's a cut with some peat moss and mixed about 60/40 straw to poo. The tubs are about 70/30 hpoo+peat/straw with around 1:2 ratio. The spawn for the whole setup was about 5 gallons of wbs that received g2g transfers from grain masters I prepared. The grain master was inoculated with a clone sample on agar. All in all I think it's coming along beautifully. Qestions and comments welcome!

Have you used shotguns for bulk spawn before? Never sawed that one yet. Your log looks great though mang!

Why peat moss in the sub?

I haven't used them for bulk grows like trays. I don't have a very reliable source for perlite in my area. I also use a Martha on occasion but it's cumbersome. Monotubs have been my saving grace haha

The peat moss is there to take the place of verm, which is again, almost impossible to source in my area. I just wanted a little extra aeration in the hpoo.

I've been curious about peat moss in bulk sub. When you fruit a cube straw log, do you just cut slits like oysters, or does it need to be in a greenhouse?
I know people do open air grows, but those have a casing to help stop some moisture loss. Maybe the water capacity of the log is so massive it just keeps the sub under the slit from drying out?
--------------------
I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...

Just some pic updates from the grow. These were spawned Saturday morning last (10/24) and already appear to be colonizing well. .jpg] [/url] . I never have any luck on straw alone. In my experience if I'm having problems with contams or slow colonization, next time add more manure!

I'm not sure what the optimum fruiting method is. The RH in my grow room is around 60-65% so I'm going to try going by the book on this and follow the RR straw log tek fruiting instructions. This is where you cut off the ends of the bag at the onset of pinning, as well as the length of the tube using the tube as a short of make shift fan. One can also place a fresh piece of plastic over the log to hold in moisture. In my past experience FAE has been more of a enemy than moisture though. I'll keep you posted!

This is just 2.5-3 days after spawning. The peat doesn't seem to be slowing colonization at all!

I'm giving this another 3-5 days before it's finished. I'm sure the Spawn would run a little quicker were it warmer in here but I have had overnight catastrophes with contams at temps over 72, especially when using straw. I like to keep it a bit on the cooler side just to be safe.

Yeah IDK man, straw has been very bitchy for me. Lost a lot of tubs experimenting with it.
The problem with peat is that it's very hard to get it to be the texture you want. IMO this is because it's water capacity is extremely high, so when you add water to peat, the area where you pour the water gets REALLY wet, and then dry peat clumps around it. This results in shit texture, and probably the reasion it's not colonizing. Hopefully you can fruit it despire this problem.

I can't say I've had this texture, or colonization issue. I've been using peat in place of verm for my last few grows and had zero problems with colonization. Also the water retention aspect of it is amazing. I had a little leftover sub from my last grow and put it in trays with lids. Not only did those trays fruit repeatedly, but with little to no misting!

How do pasteurize your straw?

beautiful straw log bro!! ive been getting into straw all summer haven't done any logs yet but IMO straw is a great additive ive settled on using it in my CVG at around 50% the shrooms seem to love it! its nice to see more people succeeding with it keep up the good work

Testing the capabilities of straw has been the major focus of my summer/fall projects. So far I've deduced that using only straw is a waste of my time, and resources. The losses are much greater than the returns. As a supplement it is unrivaled. I'm getting excellent yields using a 1:1.5:.5 ratio of straw/hpoo/peat. I also supplement the poo with about 5% gypsum by volume. So far I've had great success with this recipe in tubs and trays.

right on that's basically what ive come up with I only had marginal success with 100% straw but as a supplement/ingredient in my bulk subs it has worked wonders and cut my costs way down almost in half I usually prep 2 monotubs at a time but use the standard bucket tek recipe (650g C/2qt V/1c G) meanwhile I fill an onion bag full of straw and pasteurize in hot water for 70 minutes. then I mix them in a big 110qt tote and divide them into 2 tubs and spawn ive been toying around with worm castings lately and they seem to be a good supplement but a pain to work with(shitty texture) and quite expensive TBH I think I was getting better results with bagged store manure than the WC at 1/20th the price but ive only fruited 2WC tubs so im still undecided . OP what poo do you use horse?

Also, I will be starting a second batch of ~5 gallons of grain this weekend of the same clone sample. This will be split between 3-4 bags. Does anybody have experience using field aged cow patties? I'm strongly considering doing a side by side comparison.
