The Praying Mantis 1

The Praying Mantis appeared at my door a few weeks ago. Plump with eggs, she wanted to lay them in my house but I thought better of it and gently placed her back outside after a few times of her sneaking back in and crawling up the wall. Her presence I considered mystical at the time, and the meaning did not escape my attention.
A week later she reappears at my door, having lost some weight, and with a major injury to her abdomen as well. It appeared a lizard or bird beak had punctured her and things were clearly not going well. Once again, she wanted inside but this time it seemed she just wanted comfort, or perhaps to be put out of her misery.
I was unable to bring myself to kill this creature, and tried instead to comfort her. Their eyes, it's in their eyes. Mysterious eyes.
The next day I noticed she had left me the future. Her egg case was adhered to the top of my propane burner, which I placed in the garage to keep for the spring when I hope to observe new life.

Yes, there may very well be some meaning in it. You are wise to treat other beings with respect.

Hi Once
Pregnant crayfish, nice!
A couple of weeks ago I was pumping water from the river and saw what I thought was a twig but it looked odd stuck to the screen on the check valve from the suction. I pulled it off and it was a little crayfish, maybe an inch long. Too small for dinner! Didn't seem the worse for the experience but they are pretty tough little dudes.
Dragonflies are so cool, I had one come by and check me out 3-4 times in that same spot by the river. It was curious about the pump or by me and kept coming by.
At first I thought I had toasted the mantis egg sac because that's where I cook dinner and the sac looked a little toasted with a glossier coating to it and smaller than what I have seen. What's perhaps even odder to finish the story off is that I had moved a sac from a light post last fall on another house so I wonder if the baby mantis came from the one I moved? I'm leaving the one on the grill there because to remove is to risk damage. Have another grill for a backup...
