Slow loading
    #22430496 - 10/25/15 04:32 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I am not sure if this is the right place to post but I am having some technical difficulty with my asus laptop.

Everytime I try to open ''My computer'' or ''Downloads'' folder or any other folder it takes forever to load and show me my files/drives

Sometimes even a simple jpg image is not shown what it is, i.e the picture, and is shown as a blank jpg document until you click it and is shown on photo viewer.

I did a defragmentation/optimization scan and also ran my anti-virus. The defragmentation did absolutely nothing, so no difference and my anti-virus found 1 threat which was successfully removed. The anti-virus I have is AVG

Everything is uptodate (OS & antivirus)and I've tried several reboots

I use windows 8.1

Processor: Inte(R) Core(tm) i3-3217U CPU @ 1.80GHz
Installed memory: 4.00GB
System Type: 64-bit OS
Laptop model: ASUS

Sometimes, the slow loading of contents in explorer is due to a network connection that is slow or unavailable, so you may have to check on this. The thumbnailing function sometimes appears to suffer from problems that in some cases can be solved by rebuilding the thumbnail database, so you may want to look into that as well.

you can do a refresh of the system, without losing your data files, and fix issues like you are having. it will remove third party software that is installed, so you would have to re install those programs. type 'refresh' in the search box to get to it.

^ To do this, I think it's just a hidden file called something like thumbs.db in the folder. You could probably just rename it (this way you back it up just in case) and then if that works go ahead and delete it.

How long have you had Windows on there since you did a reformat?

Windows has this cancerous growth called "The Registry" that causes such symptoms if you don't do a clean install yearly or bi-yearly :V

Is the thumbs.db approach still being used? I thought that newer versions of Windows used a centralized thumbnail database, but I may be wrong.

No clue. Last I remember it was, but I'm more of a Linux user.

Hopefully they didn't stuff it in the registry

You know what's better than a registry?

Two registries.

I haven't ever formatted this laptop since I got it 2years ago.

I did a disk cleanup and optimization but so far nothing has work. I think I will give it a format, it's about time for one.

sometimes, when I open an internet browser (i use firefox), the screen blinks a little bit, like automatically goes out of programm and into programm again. The bar and color of the tabs change as if the cursor is out of the programm and regain their natural color scheme as if the cursor went back into programm.

This happens with numerous other programms such as MS Word and Notepad.

Back up everything you want, reformat it and then install a better os like slackware so that you don't have this issue again.

Ever try resetting your cpu to factory condition? It could be just a random program bugging out. Reinstalling all default files could make it work.

There's no such thing as 'resetting a cpu to factory condition'.

pressing f11 at the start of your cpu brings you to the recovery panel, you can either recover your cpu to a saved backed up point of time, or reset your cpu entirely to factory condition, ive done it many of times, it reinstalls all original files that came with the cpu while deleting every program whether its good or bad. ( It even one time recovered a bug that was happening in my video card )

CPU = 'central processing unit', colloquially known as the 'processor'. It's a semiconductor that has no built-in modifiable software. It is always in 'factory condition'.

What you're talking about is restoring the operating system (Windows in this case) to a restore point. It has nothing to do with the CPU, neither does it have anything to do with 'factory settings'.

It's confusing, I know; it's best to not confuse others with inappropriate terminology.

First of all, windows 8.1 NEVER needs to be defragmented. The days of having to defragment windows was long gone with windows 7. Also, your CPU is sort of slow.

If you back up all your data, media, programs, and serial keys for your programs, then I would just reformat. You should reformat every couple years anyway just to keep your hard drive fresh and running optimally. You can always make a seperate media/storage partition and keep all your data on that partition.

Also, go into your startup programs menu in the task manager, look to see if you have any extranneous programs starting up with windows. Also look in your list of programs and uninstall the one's you don't use.
