Kinda getting irritated...
    #22430198 - 10/25/15 12:15 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

So the sour smell appeared again. I did eatyualive's oven pasteurization tek, using FrankHorrigan's CVG tek with 1.25 qt of worm castings added. I used mini monos, 3 qts of sub to 2 qts of spawn. I used a total of 8 qts spawn, 2qts slurried and mixed into the other spawn. I cleaned the spawning room before any of this, and mixed everything together. It sits for 9 hours, and i come back and smell a sweetish sour scent from 2 of the tubs. WTF?! It wasn't even that wet. What went wrong and can they be saved?

On the pasteurizing? Or the sub? I keep my house around 75-80 degrees, so I doubt that's the issue :/. How would I test that?

Edit: shit, i just dipped my thermometer into the sub, it hit 80 and kept on rising

your making mushrooms not wine, 80 is to hot. 65 to 75 is perfect,, sounds like your sub spoiled from the heat.
start over
im surprised nobody else chimed in.

So it's wasted? I still see mycelial growth, so I'm hoping it's all not lost.

I spawned a few pf-tek, popcorn, and hard red winter wheat jars to CVG trays at a 1:2 ratio this summer in CA and didn't have issues at 78-85°F. They colonized really fast and cropped a few good flushes before contaminating.

I think 90°F is when the mycelium starts to die off.

I would try a batch without worm castings if you are having issues. Plain CVG is notoriously contam-resistant.

I used plain CVG last time and had this. I think it might be the slurry or the oven pasteurizing tek. I think I'm switching to stove and oven bags again. My first 2 boxes were a raging success with CVG and Frank's jar pasteurization tek...

How high did it rise?

80 degrees f ambient in your house is not too high. I have gone from spore to fruit in mid 80s degree f with no issue, though mid 70s degree f is the ideal range.

that is fine for mycelium

it will grow stuff like a lot of bacteria and yeast faster though

i agree with toadstool above, if it is a problem switch to a less nutritive substrate

Make sure you're maintaining adequate pasteurization temps between 140-160 degrees for an hour. If you're going too low temp during pasteurization I'd imagine it could cause issues like you're describing.

Cut out the worm castings.

I guess I need more practice before I can start using nutritive subs. I was seriously hoping for some dense growth. I guess it's back to the pot on the stove and oven bags.

Some growers report their substrate has a sweet smell to them but are healthy.
Ride it out and see what happens.

I'm confused. Have you spawned to the bulk sub yet? If so, has the spawn started to recover and leap off into the substrate?

I just spawned it, yes. It was barely growing and it smelled ultra sour. I already dumped it and started anew. Currently smelling like lysol wipes, spawn, and sub, so good so far
