waking life
    #2242885 - 01/14/04 10:57 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

this film has been out for about 2 years now and I'm sure there have been many threads about it, but I think it deserves one more. Waking Life is one of the best films I have seen lately and I think everyone who hasnt seen it should do themselves a favor and go check it out.

here is a site about the film: http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gte484v/wakinglife.html

do it!

In form, Waking Life is a series of lectures and orated theories about consciousness, life, and meaning, voiced by over 50 characters, all of whom were shot on digital video. We don't see them, however ? using digital animation software developed by Bob Sabiston, Richard Linklater, the film's director, rotoscoped the entire film. About 30 animation artists recreated the film's action using expressionistic, painterly images that range from uncannily accurate to almost caricatural. While the subjects bounce from quantum physics to neo-evolution to alternate realities to social outrage and political disillusionment, the visuals bounce, too. Everything floats in the movie ? eyeballs, hands, sidewalks, backgrounds, even the visualized thoughts of the speakers. As one character mentions "absurd" particle theory as a variation on determinism, cartoon particles appear over his shoulder driving a toy car and wearing a lampshade. Throughout the movie, Wiley Wiggins (the main character) walks around listening to everyone, wondering why he keeps floating into the sky, and eventually realizes he's in a lucid dream that he cannot wake from.

haha i dont cause that would look crazy if im in class or something.  What i do is just hold a pen or pencil in the air, concentrate on it, and let go.

It's crazy when it actually floats in the air!
