Twin Freaks

so i started out with an FAE problem which i addressed by adding more holes. as a result the cakes have grown some aerial myc which after adding the holes turned into these blobs. so ignore that.

i'm guessing the brown spots and striations are co2 related but the conjoined twin situation must be genetic right?

it's in one. it just initially didn't have enough holes cuz i forgot that the holes i was making were smaller then the ones in the tek.
so i added more and it should now be to spec. and i did notice i'm not getting the aerial myc any more so i think it's working properly now.

it does essentially the same job and a TC advised me that it would be fine.
meanwhile i never seen freaks like these before, in any FC.

Really because they look similar to a vert infection... Split stipes and deformities can be tons of things, but that's higher up on the list.

Could that be low humidity from the hydroton? looks like splitting and whatnot to me.

It's not too dry, the humidity outside the tub is 65%. and i have been misting regularly.
i harvested 38 grams wet and the cake seems in good shape. No sign of contams or blueing before picking and a strong blueing on the fruits after picking. Fruits seem to have the proper density. Dwformities include inverted caps, merged caps and split stems.
I should mention that i think my lighting was insufficient, now fixed.

What strain is it?
I have a hunch certain strains are more prone to mutant fruits from multispore....

Hydroton is fine to use in a SGFC. In fact given that most people get fine perlite not coarse, hydroton in many instances perform better.
I don't see any white molds, possibly some psuedomonias, maybe cut back the misting a touch. The split stipe is probably from a humidity fluctuation, most likely happened when you added the holes and got it up to par. I would suggest that the excess mutants and blobs are probably due to the bare minimum consolidation of one week that is so popular with impatient new growers. 2 weeks would be far better.

The 3rd cake does seem to be doung much better, and the first cake only had minor deformations. And it is also correct that i took 1 week for conslidation.

well i'm definitely seeing better growth, but i still have some fuzz on the stem there and you can see the cakes behind it still have some aerial myc. those also seem to be pinning mostly on the side facing the holes.

this is the one behind that ^^ one, amazonian placed in the FC after fixing the FAE.

Dude you are way overmisting those. Do not mist until the water from the previous mist is gone. Those caps are soaked.

that pic was taken just after misting. i do make sure they look dry before i mist again and i try to mist every 6 hours, 3 times a day.
should mist lighter when i do?
a;so i think i still might not be 100% to spec with this fc. the tek calles for 1/4" holes every 2 inches. since i can make 1/8" holes i did it every inch or so.
but 1/8" is not half of 1/4" in terms of surface area is it?
should i add more holes? if so how many?

Why don't you just make one to spec with perilite already? Is it not available where you live?

i haven't found perlite in a regular store, and ordering would cost me more in postage then the price of the perlite. but i don't think that's the problem anyway.
the problem is i don't have a way to make 1/4" holes. i have a soldering iron i use to punch holes and it is 1/8".
another issue i am having is the placement of the tub. i don't really have any place i can put it where i don't walk past it all the time.
in any case i am starting to lean toward the other solution of switching to monotubs. i'm gonna get into that anyway since i want to grow pans, might as well do cubes the same way.

1/4" have 4x the area that 1/8" does. because the math says r2, and not 2r.
when you have much lower FAE than supposed to you cant mist as much as you normally would, mushrooms dont like staying wet.
and fuzzy feet wont go back IME, but next flush will look better now that you got better air exchange.

Hydroton is fine but the way he drilled his holes is not. Drill the holes to spec, as recommended, there is a reason its 1/4" every two inches.

meh screwit.
i'm switching to monos. the more i learn the more that looks like the better option for me.
here's one i built earlier for pans:
i added pvc pipes where the holes are to make it easier to adjust the polystuff and i made some caps to put on the bottom holes. the tub is 20qt and the bottom holes are at 3" up.

i was planning to do the mixing in the container i pasteurise the bulk sub in. also i might do a grow or 2 with just grains or crumbled cakes and a casing layer.

so i was hoping to get a print out of the large one, but it buckled under it's own weight, detached from the cake a bit and started dying.
i am presuming this is another sign of low FAE and added some more holes. as they say in the navy 'there is no wrong hole'.
is slow growth another sign of low FAE?
i seem to be getting much faster growth from the pin stage now, but it could be genetics. these are amazonian that colonised much quicker then the cambodians. saturday:

nope, area = pi multiplied by r2. 1/42= 1/16 1/82= 1/64
1/16 = 4x 1/64

In our defense, when you get told something with a little "assholedness" it tends to stick in your brain better like... 2+2=4... Compared to... 2+2=4 you dumb motherfucker, wtf is wrong with you.
You would totally remember it better when told the 2nd way because it would have an emotion (in this case anger) attached to it.lol...so if you ever see me sounding like an asshole, that is the method to my madness

well either the holes i added or the superior genetics of the amazonian, or more likely: both seem to be having an effect:

still some deformation on the stems, but overall a vast improvement.
and you guys can laugh all you want, but i learned more by fucking up like this then i would have in 10 years of perfection as a result of going by the book.
